Meskendir Valley and Kılıçlar Valley, the “Sword” valley, are two neighbouring walks in the Göreme National Park area, usually described as lying close to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, and they are often put together as one loop: Meskendir for its rock-cut tunnels, Kılıçlar for its steep sections. None of our 80 catalogue records names either valley, so this guide rests on general knowledge, the climate file and the museum distances that 13 of the 43 Göreme records state. It gives no trailhead, length, walking time, price or opening hour. Ask your hotel or a local guide to mark the route on an offline map before you set out.

Two valleys, two characters

Kılıçlar means “swords”. The name is usually explained by blade-like ridges and spires in the rock, although this guide cannot confirm where it comes from, and the name Meskendir is explained less often. What matters for a walker is what each valley asks of you.

Meskendir Kılıçlar
Known for rock-cut passages, usually called tunnels steep sections
What it asks of you a torch, stooping, ease in enclosed spaces grip, balance, care on loose or smooth rock
Weak points low, wet or dark passages; queues in narrow places descents after rain or frost; tired legs and young children

Meskendir: the tunnels

The soft tuff of Cappadocia has been cut into rooms, stores and passages for centuries, and Meskendir is one of the valleys where walkers meet that on foot. A rock-cut passage is usually narrower and lower than it looks from the entrance, and the light fades after a few steps.

  • Take a torch. A phone torch is enough for a short look; do not go further than you can see.
  • Turn back if it is low, wet or unclear. Passages hold water after rain: March, April and May average 12 to 13 rainy days a month in Nevşehir (MGM, 1959–2025).
  • Know yourself. If enclosed spaces bother you, skip the tunnels and enjoy the valley from outside.
  • Keep children by the hand, and keep out of any fenced, closed or recently fallen area.

The same care applies at Zemi Valley, the other walk in this area known for rock-cut passages.

Kılıçlar: the steep sections

“Steep” here does not mean technical climbing. It means descents and short climbs on loose gravel, steps worn smooth and sloping tuff, where a hand on the rock helps. Shoes with grip matter more than anything else you carry, and the sections ask for a slow pace.

Wet and frozen ground changes the walk. Tuff turns slick in rain, and in Nevşehir the January average is a maximum of 4.0 °C and a minimum of −3.6 °C, with about 12 rainy days that month. In those conditions a steep section can become a place to turn back, not to push on. If you are unsure whether a stretch is passable, treat that as your answer, and do not walk it alone or after the light starts to fade. The loop is a poor fit for pushchairs, and for anyone who needs level ground.

Loop options

The shapes below are how such walks are usually put together. They are not measured routes, and the guide does not know where the junctions are.

Shape What it means Who it suits
Short loop the two valleys only, starting and ending near the museum walkers who want a morning or an afternoon
Longer day the loop joined to the Rose Valley and Red Valley network, ending towards Göreme or Çavuşin steady walkers who have arranged a taxi or a lift
Tunnels only Meskendir and back people happy underground who want to avoid the steepest ground
Easier choice skip both and walk Love Valley families, anyone wanting a flat floor

The longer day is where Rose Valley and Red Valley comes in, with its church stops and late-afternoon colour. For the flat option read Love Valley, and for how all the valleys compare, the hiking overview. Whichever shape you choose, tell the hotel which way you are going and when you expect to be back.

Combining it with the museum

The museum gives the walk a landmark to find and an easy place to ask for a taxi. The churches inside are cool and mostly dim, which suits the middle of a summer day, so a sensible order is the valleys early or late and the museum when the sun is high. The Open-Air Museum guide covers what is inside; it also notes that tickets and hours change, so check the official source.

If a balloon flight is cancelled, the loop fills the free morning well: balloons flew on 340 of 579 recorded days, 59% (1 January 2025 – 2 August 2026, the date at which our flight calendar ends).

When to go

Month Average maximum Average minimum Rainy days For this loop
January 4.0 °C −3.6 °C 12 icy rock; avoid the steep sections
April 16.0 °C 5.1 °C 12 wet passages, slippery tuff
May 20.6 °C 8.9 °C 13 green; carry a rain layer
June 24.9 °C 11.7 °C 8 warm; start early
July 28.5 °C 13.7 °C 2 hot, about 12 hours of sun; early or late only
September 24.5 °C 10.5 °C 3 settled and warm, a good month
October 18.3 °C 6.8 °C 7 mild; earlier sunsets, so start earlier

Hotels on the museum side of Göreme

Because the loop starts near the museum, the distances hotels state to it are the useful figure. 13 of the 43 Göreme records give one, from about 300 m to 1.8 km. The nearest, by the records’ own words:

Hotel Neighbourhood What the record says
Zemi Hotel Cappadocia Gaferli about 300 m to the museum; outdoor pool, spa, restaurant
Cappadocia Cave Suites Gaferli about 1.1 km; balloon views, restaurant, family rooms
Amber Cave Suites Gaferli about 1.2 km; terrace with local wine tasting
Castle Cave Hotel Gaferli about 1.2 km; balloon and valley views, wake-up service
Design Cave Hotel not listed museum, Love Valley and Pigeon Valley within walking distance, no figure
Local Cave House Gaferli town centre and museum within walking distance; 12 rooms, rock-carved pool

No record gives a distance to Meskendir or Kılıçlar themselves, so the numbers show only how far you are from the usual starting point. Every record is in the Göreme section of the hotel list.

Where to stay

For a short walk to the museum, Zemi Hotel Cappadocia is nearest by its record, and Design Cave Hotel is the one that names walking distance to the museum and two valleys. Aza Cave Hotel (+12 Adults Only), pictured at the top, is in Göreme’s Aydınlı neighbourhood with 30 rooms, a spa and a seasonal pool; it takes adult guests only and its record gives no distance to the museum. Questions answered in this article

What are Meskendir Valley and Kılıçlar Valley?

Two neighbouring valley walks in the Göreme National Park area, usually described as lying close to the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Meskendir is known for rock-cut tunnels and Kılıçlar (the Sword valley) for steep sections, and the two are often walked as one loop.

Do I need a torch for the Meskendir tunnels?

Yes, at least the torch on your phone. The passages are cut into soft rock and can be low, narrow and dark; do not go further than you can see, and turn back if a passage is low, wet or unclear.

How hard are the steep sections of Kılıçlar?

They are descents and climbs on loose gravel, worn steps and smooth tuff, not technical climbing, but rain and frost make the rock slippery. The January average minimum in Nevşehir is −3.6 °C (MGM, 1959–2025), so winter is a poor season for them.

Can the loop be joined to Rose Valley?

Walkers do link the two, which turns the outing into a longer day that ends towards Göreme or Çavuşin. This guide cannot confirm junctions or lengths, so ask your hotel or a guide to mark the route on an offline map.

Which hotels are nearest to the museum where the loop starts?

By their own records, Zemi Hotel Cappadocia (about 300 m), Cappadocia Cave Suites (about 1.1 km) and Amber Cave Suites and Castle Cave Hotel (about 1.2 km). 13 of the 43 Göreme records state a figure.
