Zemi Valley: the shaded walk south of Göreme
Zemi Valley near Göreme: the El Nazar church, rock-cut passages and trees, what "shaded" can and cannot promise, and how the 80 hotel records relate to it.

Zemi Valley is the shaded walk among the Göreme valleys. It is usually described as lying south of the town, with a rock-cut church called El Nazar, rock-cut tunnels and a good number of trees. That is about all this guide can say with confidence, and it is better said plainly: none of our 80 catalogue records names Zemi Valley, the church or a tunnel, and none describes shade. One Göreme hotel, Zemi Hotel Cappadocia, shares the name. This is therefore a shorter and more careful guide than the ones for Love Valley or Pigeon Valley. It covers what the valley is known for, how it compares with the others and how to plan the walk, and it has no prices, hours, distances or walking times.
What the valley is known for
Three things come up whenever the valley is described: a church, passages cut through the rock, and trees. The church is El Nazar (Nazar Kilisesi), a rock-cut church of the kind found in many Cappadocian valleys. The tunnels are passages cut into the soft tuff, and rock-cut passages are usually narrow or low in places. The trees are the reason the valley is called shaded, since they grow along the valley floor where the open valleys have almost none. Our own records give no date for the church, no account of its paintings and no opening arrangements, so ask your hotel or check the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for the current position on access and on any ticket before you go.
Shade, and how far to trust the word
“Shaded” is the word used for this valley, and trees on the floor make it believable, but it is a relative term. Nothing in our data measures it, and a walk can be shaded for half its length and open for the rest. Treat it as a reason to prefer Zemi in warm weather, not as a promise. The figures show why it matters: in Nevşehir the average maximum is 28.5 °C in July and 28.7 °C in August, the sun averages 11.9 and 11.3 hours a day, and the record highs are 39.5 °C and 38.2 °C (MGM, 1959–2025). Even on a shaded path carry water and a hat, and expect any open stretch to be hot.
Shade cuts both ways. Out of the sun, paths and steps can stay damp or icy for longer after rain or frost, and the January average minimum is −3.6 °C.
How it compares with the other valleys
| Valley | Known for | Shade | Records that name it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Love Valley | tall chimneys on a flat floor; a roadside viewpoint | little | 3 |
| Pigeon Valley | dovecotes; the walk down from Uçhisar to Göreme | little in summer | 5 |
| Rose Valley and Red Valley | pink-red colour at sunset; churches on the way | little | 2 |
| Zemi Valley | El Nazar church, rock-cut passages, trees | described as shaded | 0 |
The last column is the honest one. The more often a valley appears in hotel records, the more we can say about distances from a bed, and for Zemi we can say nothing of that kind. Whether the hotel that shares its name was named after the valley, our records do not say.
Planning the walk
Because no record gives a trailhead, a route or a length, build the plan around a conversation with your hotel. Ask where the walk starts, whether it is a loop or one way, how long it takes at an ordinary pace and which passages are open. Agree the return too: on foot, by taxi or by hotel transfer. Set out with daylight to spare, and tell the hotel when you expect to be back. If you want a second stop on the same day, the Open-Air Museum guide covers one of the best-documented sights in the area.
Who it suits
It suits walkers who want a change from the open valleys, people travelling in the warmer months who value any shade, and anyone who likes a church or an old passage at the end of a walk. It suits less well anyone with a pushchair or limited mobility, because rock-cut passages and their steps are rarely level, and anyone who is uneasy in dark or enclosed spaces. Children who like to explore may enjoy it, but they should stay with an adult and out of any passage they cannot see to the end of. For the easiest valley choose Love Valley; for a longer afternoon with churches choose Rose Valley and Red Valley.
Practical points
- Torch. A phone torch is enough for a short look into a passage; do not go further than you can see.
- Rock. Do not climb walls or chimneys, and keep out of closed, fenced or recently fallen areas.
- Turn back. If a passage is low, wet or unclear, leave it.
- Footwear and water. Shoes with grip and more water than you expect to need.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the comfortable seasons: May averages 20.6 °C with about 13 rainy days, June 24.9 °C with 8, and September 24.5 °C with 3. July and August are where shade pays most, so go early or late and keep to the trees. For every month see when to visit and the weather page.
What the catalogue says about the name
Zemi Hotel Cappadocia is in Gaferli, on Müze Caddesi, about 300 m from the Open-Air Museum. Its record describes it as the only 4-star hotel in Göreme town, with an outdoor pool for adults and children, a spa, a restaurant, room service and breakfast included. It does not say that the name refers to the valley or give a distance to it, so do not read the name as a claim about walking distance. Gaferli is one of Göreme’s neighbourhoods: 11 of the 43 Göreme records give it as their area, and the Göreme guide lays them out.
Where to stay
For a base on the museum side of Göreme, Zemi Hotel Cappadocia is a small 4-star hotel with a pool and a spa. Design Cave Hotel is a cave house inside Göreme National Park, with the Open-Air Museum, Love Valley and Pigeon Valley within walking distance and sunrise terraces over the balloon flights. Logos Cave Cappadocia, pictured at the top, has nine rooms in cave style, a 4-minute drive to the museum, about 2 km to Love Valley, a terrace and a garden, a 24-hour reception and a concierge who can help organise tours, so it is a fair place to ask about Zemi. All records are in the Göreme section of the hotel list. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.
