Avanos guide: pottery town on the Kızılırmak
Avanos is the pottery town on the Kızılırmak: how to visit workshops, how it fits a day trip from Göreme, and why our catalogue has no Avanos hotel but 3 in Çavuşin.

Avanos is a district town on the Kızılırmak, Turkey’s longest river, known for pottery made from the river’s red clay. It is best treated as a half-day or day trip, not a place to sleep: none of the 80 hotels in our catalogue has Avanos as its town. The nearest are the 3 hotels in Çavuşin, whose postal addresses read Avanos. This guide covers the river, how to visit a workshop and where Avanos fits in a route, and it says plainly what the catalogue does not know.
The river and the clay
The Kızılırmak, whose name means “Red River”, cuts through the north of the region on its way to the Black Sea. The reddish clay along its banks has been worked into pots, plates and jugs for a very long time, and Avanos is where that craft is concentrated today. Among the shapes you will see are pitchers and clay pots like those used for testi kebab, the dish cooked and broken open at the table. Avanos pottery and testi kebab both appear in what to do in Cappadocia.
The craft is also a matter of ordinary trade: many workshops sell directly to visitors, so a visit is partly a shop visit. The sensible approach is to look at how a piece is made before deciding what to buy.
Visiting a pottery workshop
Workshops range from small family studios to larger showrooms. In most you can watch a potter throw a pot on the wheel, and some let you try. A few questions help whatever the size:
- Can I take my piece home? A thrown pot has to dry and then be fired, so a piece you make may not be ready the same day. Ask whether it can be collected later or sent on.
- Which pieces are made here? Ask to see the studio and the wheels, and which items are made on the premises.
- How will it travel? Ceramics are fragile; ask how the workshop packs pieces for a plane.
- Is there a charge for trying the wheel? Ask before you sit down. This guide gives no prices.
Take time over the choice: a handmade piece will show small differences from its neighbour on the shelf, and that is part of what you are buying.
The riverside and the town
Away from the workshops, the usual pause in Avanos is by the river: there is a bridge over the Kızılırmak and a riverside walk, which suit a short stop and a tea. The town is a working centre for the surrounding villages, not a heritage site in the manner of the Open-Air Museum, so give it time to be ordinary. If you are travelling by taxi or tour, agree the length of the stop in advance.
When to go
A workshop visit happens mostly indoors, so Avanos is one of the stops that works in any season; the best time to visit article has the monthly figures for the region. In Nevşehir the average July maximum is 28.5 °C and the average January maximum 4.0 °C, with an average January minimum of −3.6 °C; January has about 12 rainy days on average against about 2 in July (MGM, 1959–2025). On a hot afternoon a shaded workshop is a relief, and in winter it is one of the few stops where you are not outdoors for long. This guide gives no opening days or hours, so check them before you set out.
Avanos on a route
Avanos sits at the north end of the line that runs out of Göreme through Çavuşin: Çavuşin, Zelve, Paşabağı and Devrent Valley come first, and Avanos suits the end of the day. To the north lies Gülşehir and the Open Palace, a quieter extension for a second day. Without a car, a taxi or tour is the practical choice; the catalogue gives no figure for the distance from any hotel to Avanos, and this guide gives none either.
Why the catalogue has no Avanos hotels
| Town | Hotels in the catalogue |
|---|---|
| Göreme | 43 |
| Uçhisar | 19 |
| Ürgüp | 9 |
| Mustafapaşa | 4 |
| Çavuşin | 3 |
| Ortahisar | 2 |
| Avanos | 0 |
| Total | 80 |
The catalogue follows gocappadocia.com, so it holds the hotels listed there. The records of the three Çavuşin hotels show how the postal geography works: Atax Cave House gives “Yukarı Neighborhood, No. 154, Çavuşin, Avanos”; Azure Cave Suites has “2nd Cluster Area No:162, 50800 Avanos”; Seki Cave Hotel has “Çavuşin Village, 2nd Cluster Houses No:158/1, Avanos”. So Çavuşin hotels are in Avanos district, even though they are not in the town itself. All three are in the cave category and list a balloon view and family rooms; two list a valley view, and none lists a pool, a spa or a restaurant. If you want a base on the northern road, the Çavuşin guide describes the three; for more choice, the hotel list has all 80.
Where to stay for Avanos
None of the three nearest hotels is in Avanos itself, but all three are on the road towards it. Atax Cave House is in Çavuşin’s Yukarı neighbourhood and describes itself as near Göreme, Ürgüp and Avanos, a workable base for day trips. Azure Cave Suites lists balloon and valley views and jacuzzi and fireplace suite options. Seki Cave Hotel has 16 rooms, each with a fireplace, and is listed as pet-friendly. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.
