Cappadocia in 4 days: a route with Ihlara and the underground cities
A 4-day Cappadocia route: the 3-day plan plus a day for Ihlara, Selime and an underground city, with balloon odds by season and where to base yourself.

Four days in Cappadocia fit the whole 3-day route (Göreme and the valleys, the northern line from Çavuşin to Avanos, then Uçhisar, Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa) and add a fourth day for Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery and one underground city. Put the balloon on the first morning: over our record, a four-morning window held a flown morning 91% of the time, and 81% from November to March. This article gives no distances, durations, fees or opening hours, only slices such as “morning” and “afternoon”.
The four days at a glance
| Day | Theme | Main stops | Car, taxi or tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Göreme and the valleys | Balloon morning, Open-Air Museum, Love Valley, sunset | Mostly on foot or a short taxi |
| 2 | The northern line | Çavuşin, Zelve, Paşabağı, Devrent, Avanos | Car, taxi or a day tour |
| 3 | Uçhisar to Mustafapaşa | Pigeon Valley, Uçhisar Castle, Ortahisar, Ürgüp, Mustafapaşa | Walk in the morning, then a taxi or a car |
| 4 | The south-west | Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery, one underground city | A car, a taxi or a tour |
Days 1 to 3 are laid out stop by stop in the 3-day article, so this one spends its words on day 4 and on the balloon odds. What the extra day buys you is slack: if day 3 ran long, a fourth day can take the overflow.
Day 4: Ihlara, Selime and an underground city
This is a long day on the road, and it is the one day of the four that leaves the main area, because Ihlara and Selime are in Aksaray province. A realistic shape:
- Early start: Ihlara Valley. Walk the first section of the gorge while it is quiet; the Ihlara guide explains the sections. Many visitors enter by a long staircase, so the climb comes at the end unless you are collected elsewhere.
- Midday: lunch at Belisırma. The riverside village at about the midpoint is the usual pause.
- Afternoon: Selime. Walk on to the far end of the gorge or drive; Selime Monastery is a steep climb through a very large rock-cut complex.
- Late afternoon or on the way: one underground city. Both lie south of Nevşehir; ask your driver which fits the route.
If the day grows too long, drop Selime or the underground city, not the gorge. Choosing between the two cities is a matter of taste:
| Kaymaklı | Derinkuyu | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is usually described | The easier of the pair, with wider tunnels | Usually named the deepest of the settlements |
| Shorter way from Nevşehir | Yes, it is the first on the road south | Further down the same road |
| What you do | Walk the open upper levels | Descend by stairs and low passages |
| More in | Kaymaklı guide | Derinkuyu guide |
Anyone who dislikes low, narrow passages should choose Kaymaklı or skip both.
A slower day 4
If a long road day does not appeal, the south-eastern line makes a calmer fourth day: Mustafapaşa, the former Sinasos with its stone mansions, and Keşlik Monastery near it. Add the Soğanlı valleys, with their small painted churches and cloth dolls, and it becomes a full day, because Soğanlı is in Kayseri province and needs most of a day by road. The trade-off is that this variant drops Ihlara and the underground cities.
Balloon mornings across four days
The record runs from 1 January 2025 to 2 August 2026, where our flight calendar ends. We slid a window of one to four consecutive mornings across it and counted the windows with at least one flown morning:
| Mornings | All year | November to March | April to October |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 59% | 41% | 71% |
| 2 | 75% | 59% | 87% |
| 3 | 85% | 72% | 94% |
| 4 | 91% | 81% | 99% |
Read the table as a description, not a forecast. The four-morning share is 526 of 576 windows overall, 196 of 241 from November to March and 330 of 335 from April to October. The record holds one full winter and parts of another, and it does not say why a day was cancelled. The longest run without a flight was 18 days, from 5 to 22 February 2025. How many days in Cappadocia explains the method.
What it means for the plan:
- Fly first. Book the balloon for morning 1, so that cancellations still leave mornings 2, 3 and 4.
- Keep day 4 movable. The Ihlara day is the one that can slide if a flight lands on a later morning; a pick-up before dawn followed by a long road day is tiring.
- Winter needs the spare. From November to March, 45 of the 241 four-morning windows held no flight at all.
Where to base yourself
| Base | Hotels in the catalogue | Why it suits four days |
|---|---|---|
| Göreme | 43 | Day 1 sights and the balloon fields on foot |
| Uçhisar | 19 | The castle and Pigeon Valley on day 3 |
| Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa | 9 and 4 | A quieter base nearer the south-eastern line |
You can sleep four nights in one town to unpack once, or split them, for instance two in Göreme or Uçhisar and two in Ürgüp or Mustafapaşa. No record gives a distance to Ihlara or to the underground cities, so ask your hotel how long your driver needs.
Season and before you go
In Nevşehir the average July maximum is 28.5 °C and the January average high is 4.0 °C with a low of −3.6 °C (MGM, 1959–2025). Summer favours the gorge floor and early starts; winter makes the steps icy, and a cold day in January is a good day to swap day 4 for something indoors. The weather page has every month.
- Book day 4 early. A driver or a tour for the south-west is the main thing to arrange in advance.
- Wear shoes with grip. The gorge steps, Selime’s climb and the underground passages are uneven.
- Carry water and some cash. A village lunch may take cash.
- Check opening arrangements. This guide gives no fees or hours; check the official source of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Where to stay
For a base on the Uçhisar side, Wings Cappadocia, pictured at the top, is a small hotel in the Tekelli neighbourhood, about 265 m from the castle and 3.4 km from the Göreme Open-Air Museum by its record, with balloon views, free breakfast and 24-hour reception. For the south-eastern side, Konak Bezirhane Cave Otel in Mustafapaşa has 23 rooms with a jacuzzi in each and luggage storage. Kayata Cave Suites in Ürgüp has nine cave rooms, with heated floors, indoor hot tubs, parking and an airport transfer. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.
Questions answered in this article
Is 4 days enough for Cappadocia?
Yes. Four days fit the whole 3-day route (Göreme and the valleys, the Çavuşin–Avanos line, then Uçhisar and Ürgüp) and add a day for Ihlara Valley, Selime and an underground city.
What should I do on day 4?
The usual choice is the day in the south-west: a section of Ihlara Valley, lunch at Belisırma, Selime Monastery and one underground city. A slower alternative is the southern line to Mustafapaşa, Keşlik Monastery and Soğanlı.
Should I fly on the first morning?
Yes, so that a cancellation leaves three more mornings. A four-morning window held at least one flown morning 91% of the time over the record: 81% from November to March and 99% from April to October.
Can I do day 4 without a car?
Ihlara and Selime are in Aksaray province and the underground cities lie south of Nevşehir, so the day needs a car, a taxi or a tour. Book it ahead and agree where you will be collected.
Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu?
One is enough. Kaymaklı is usually described as the easier, with wider tunnels and a shorter way from Nevşehir; Derinkuyu is usually named the deepest. Choose by how you feel about low passages.
