You can split 3 days in Cappadocia like this: day 1 Göreme and the valleys around it (Open-Air Museum, Love Valley, sunset at Kızılçukur), day 2 the northern line (Çavuşin, Zelve, Paşabağı, Devrent, Avanos), day 3 Uçhisar, Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa. Put the balloon morning on the first day. Ihlara Valley and the Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities need a day of their own; if you want them, give day 3 to them. This article gives no distances, durations, fees or opening hours, only rough slices such as “morning”, “afternoon” and “half a day”.

With and without a car: where the difference starts

Day 1 is the same either way: the sights are around Göreme. The difference appears on days 2 and 3, because the sights spread across several towns.

Day Without a car With a car
Day 1 Most sights on foot or by a short taxi ride from Göreme Same sights; easy access to the starting points by car
Day 2 Sights are scattered: a day tour or a taxi At your own pace; Zelve, Paşabağı and Devrent back to back
Day 3 Walk from Pigeon Valley to Uçhisar; taxi or tour for Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa Uçhisar to Mustafapaşa in one run; or turn the day into Ihlara and an underground city

Museum fees and opening hours can change; check the official source before you go.

Day 1: Göreme, valleys and sunset

Morning: balloons. The balloon launch fields are around Göreme. To fly or to watch from a terrace, choose the first morning: the decision is made that morning by the authorities, based on wind and visibility, and if it is cancelled you still have spare mornings. Flights took place on 340 of the 579 recorded days (59%); the detail is in the balloon flight days article.

After breakfast: Göreme Open-Air Museum. The UNESCO-listed museum, with its rock-carved churches and wall paintings, is the region’s best-known stop. Set aside a half-day block.

Afternoon: Love Valley. A valley that runs among fairy chimneys and suits a walk. If it is hot, leave it for the later afternoon.

Sunset: Kızılçukur. Watch the sunset from this viewpoint over the valley. Without a car, allow for a taxi back.

Without a car: walking or a short taxi ride is enough for the Open-Air Museum and the valleys. With a car: driving to the museum and Kızılçukur cuts down the walking; think about parking beforehand.

Day 2: Çavuşin, Zelve, Paşabağı, Devrent and Avanos

Morning: Çavuşin. A small settlement north of Göreme, with its old village and church. The old village can have steps and uneven ground; wear comfortable shoes.

Later in the morning: Zelve, Paşabağı and Devrent. Three stops close to one another: the rock settlement and open-air museum at Zelve, and the fairy chimney forms at Paşabağı and Devrent Valley. With a car it is easy to do the three back to back; without one, a tour or taxi is the practical choice for this line.

Afternoon: Avanos. The town on the Kızılırmak is known for its pottery. A fitting last stop for visiting workshops and resting by the river.

In the evening, return to Göreme or the town where you are staying. If you missed Kızılçukur on day 1, you can move the sunset to this evening.

Without a car: a day tour or a taxi for the whole day is easier than arranging each stop separately. With a car: you decide how many stops to make; you can skip Avanos and go more slowly.

Day 3: Uçhisar, Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa

Morning: Pigeon Valley and Uçhisar Castle. Pigeon Valley runs between Göreme and Uçhisar. You can start the walk in Göreme and finish in Uçhisar; think of a taxi for the return. Uçhisar Castle is the highest point of the region, and the climb is by steps.

Midday: Ortahisar. Known for its rock-cut castle and cold-storage chambers. Suited to a short stop.

Afternoon: Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa. Ürgüp is the district centre; Temenni Hill and the Esbelli rock houses are among its sights. Mustafapaşa, once called Sinasos, is known for its Greek mansions. The two are close enough to fit into one afternoon.

Alternative day 3: Ihlara and an underground city. One of the Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı underground cities plus Ihlara Valley fills a day. Ihlara Valley is in Aksaray province and the underground cities lie south of the main area, so this is a full day on the road and needs a car or a tour. Tour operators often sell this route as the “Green tour”. If you choose this day, you give up the Uçhisar–Ürgüp line.

Without a car: the Pigeon Valley to Uçhisar walk makes a pleasant morning; for the afternoon you need a taxi or a tour. With a car: you can run from Uçhisar to Mustafapaşa in one go.

If you have 2 or 4 days

2 days: do day 1 as written. On day 2 see Çavuşin, Zelve and Paşabağı, skip Avanos, and add Pigeon Valley and Uçhisar Castle in the afternoon. Leave Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa for another trip.

4 days: keep the first three days and give day 4 to Ihlara and an underground city. Or limit day 3 to Uçhisar and Ortahisar and give Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa a separate, slower afternoon.

Which town to stay in

The catalogue has 80 hotels; their split helps you choose around the route.

Town Hotels in catalogue Place in the route
Göreme 43 Around the Open-Air Museum and balloon launch fields; day 1 sights
Uçhisar 19 Uçhisar Castle and Pigeon Valley; day 3 morning
Çavuşin 3 Old village; start of the day 2 line
Ürgüp 9 District centre; day 3 afternoon
Mustafapaşa 4 Old Sinasos; day 3 afternoon
Ortahisar 2 The castle; day 3 midday

Without a car, spending all three nights in one town cuts down on carrying luggage; Göreme fits this route for its closeness to the day 1 sights and the balloon morning. With a car, you could spend the last night in Ürgüp or Mustafapaşa and start day 3’s southern line from there. If you want to stay in a cave hotel, see the cave hotel guide; for neighbourhood differences in Göreme there is where to stay in Göreme. All records are in the hotel list.

Questions answered in this article

Are 3 days enough for Cappadocia?

For the main sights, yes: Göreme and its valleys, the Çavuşin–Zelve–Avanos line and the Uçhisar–Ürgüp line fit into three days. Ihlara Valley and Derinkuyu/Kaymaklı need a separate day.

Can you see Cappadocia without hiring a car?

Yes. The sights around Göreme can be done on foot or with a short taxi ride; the Çavuşin–Avanos line and Ürgüp–Mustafapaşa need a tour or a taxi.

Where in a 3-day route should the balloon flight go?

On the first morning, so that a cancellation leaves you spare mornings. The decision is made each morning by the authorities, based on wind and visibility; flights took place on 340 of the 579 recorded days (59%).

Which town should I stay in?

The catalogue lists 43 hotels in Göreme, 19 in Uçhisar, 9 in Ürgüp, 4 in Mustafapaşa, 3 in Çavuşin and 2 in Ortahisar. Without a car, a town where walks start from your door such as Göreme suits; with a car, Ürgüp or Mustafapaşa are also options.

Do Ihlara Valley and the underground cities fit into 3 days?

They fit if you give them a day: Ihlara Valley is in Aksaray province, and Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı lie south of the main area. You would then shorten or skip the Uçhisar–Ürgüp day.

What are the museum fees and opening hours?

This article gives neither, because they can change. Check the museum's official source before you go.
