Balloons fly in Cappadocia all year, but the share of flying days changes a great deal with the season. In the day-by-day calendar we hold, balloons flew on 340 of the 579 days between 1 January 2025 and 2 August 2026 (59%) and did not fly on 239. For 2025 alone, they flew on 223 of 365 days (61%). From June to August the monthly share stayed between 74% and 84%; in four of the five winter months in the record (February 2025, December 2025, January and February 2026) it fell to 25–29%.
Below you will find the monthly table, the days without flights, the longest streaks and what the data suggests about how many nights to stay. The record describes the past; it cannot tell you whether a particular morning will fly.
Month by month: flown and cancelled
| Month | Flown | Cancelled | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 18 | 13 | 58% |
| February 2025 | 7 | 21 | 25% |
| March 2025 | 19 | 12 | 61% |
| April 2025 | 19 | 11 | 63% |
| May 2025 | 23 | 8 | 74% |
| June 2025 | 25 | 5 | 83% |
| July 2025 | 23 | 8 | 74% |
| August 2025 | 26 | 5 | 84% |
| September 2025 | 20 | 10 | 67% |
| October 2025 | 18 | 13 | 58% |
| November 2025 | 16 | 14 | 53% |
| December 2025 | 9 | 22 | 29% |
| 2025 total | 223 | 142 | 61% |
| January 2026 | 9 | 22 | 29% |
| February 2026 | 8 | 20 | 29% |
| March 2026 | 13 | 18 | 42% |
| April 2026 | 18 | 12 | 60% |
| May 2026 | 17 | 14 | 55% |
| June 2026 | 25 | 5 | 83% |
| July 2026 | 25 | 6 | 81% |
| August 2026 (1–2 only) | 2 | 0 | 100% |
The share is flown days divided by the number of days in the month. The record only says “flown” or “not flown”: it does not show how many balloons took off, which operators flew, or why a day was cancelled.
Highest and lowest months
The highest shares were August 2025 (84%), June 2025 and June 2026 (83%) and July 2026 (81%). The lowest was February 2025 (25%), followed by December 2025, January 2026 and February 2026 (29% each).
The same month can look very different from one year to the next: January was 58% in 2025 and 29% in 2026; May was 74% in 2025 and 55% in 2026. Some months came out close: June was 83% in both years, April 63% and 60%, February 25% and 29%. Comparing the same seven months (January to July), balloons flew on 134 of 212 days in 2025 (63%) and 115 of 212 in 2026 (54%). A monthly share shows a tendency, not a promise.
The longest run of flying days was 16 days, from 29 May to 13 June 2025. In 2026 balloons flew 14 days in a row from 30 May to 12 June, and 11 days in a row from 5 to 15 July 2025. The longest cancellation streak was 18 days, from 5 to 22 February 2025; the second longest was 9 days, from 6 to 14 February 2026.
Which days did not fly?
The days without flights in the winter months were:
| Month | Days without flights | Count |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 4–6, 10, 12–13, 16–19, 22–23, 25 | 13 |
| February 2025 | 5–22, 25–27 | 21 |
| December 2025 | 1, 3–7, 9–11, 15–17, 21–24, 26–31 | 22 |
| January 2026 | 1, 3–4, 8–13, 15–17, 19, 22–24, 26–31 | 22 |
| February 2026 | 2–3, 6–14, 16–19, 22, 25–28 | 20 |
There were 7 days in a row without flights from 26 December 2025 to 1 January 2026. The previous New Year looked different: balloons flew every day from 1 to 3 January 2025, so the same week turned out very differently in the two years.
The record holds 10 cancellation streaks of 5 days or more. Seven started between December and February; the other three were 17–21 March 2025, 18–23 March 2026 and 1–6 May 2026. In summer (June to August) the longest cancellation streak was 3 days, and in autumn (2025 only) it was 4. Flights depend on wind and visibility; because the record does not give reasons, we cannot say why any single day was cancelled.
Does the day of the week matter?
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 57% | 66% | 63% | 54% | 58% | 51% | 63% |
Weekdays (Monday to Friday) had flights on 60% of days and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) on 57%. Saturday looks lowest and Tuesday highest, but each weekday has only 82–83 days in the record, and gaps of a few points can appear by chance with so few observations. Weather does not follow the calendar, so this is what you would expect: the data gives no reason to pick a flight day by day of the week.
How many nights should you stay?
Think of nights as mornings: staying N nights gives you N mornings. The table shows the share of all consecutive N-day windows in the record in which balloons flew on at least one day.
| Season | 2 mornings | 3 mornings | 4 mornings | 5 mornings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 50% | 63% | 74% | 81% |
| Spring (Mar–May) | 77% | 88% | 94% | 97% |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 95% | 99% | 100% | 100% |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 79% | 92% | 98% | 100% |
You can read these numbers the other way round, too: in winter, 37% of the 3-day windows had no flight at all; in summer, 5% of the 2-day windows did.
In summer, 2 nights looks reasonable. In spring and autumn, a third night adds clear insurance over the first two mornings. In winter, the 18-, 9- and 7-day cancellation streaks mean you need at least 3 nights, yet even then the chance stays at 63%; it reaches 81% at 5 mornings, so 4–5 nights is the sturdier plan. Autumn rests on a single year (2025) and winter on five months of record, so read these numbers as a rough guide, not a guarantee.
The morning decision, the early start and cancellations
The decision is made on the morning of the flight by civil aviation officials, based on wind and visibility; there is no certain answer the night before. Flights take place at sunrise, so you need to get up early; ask your operator for the pick-up time. What happens after a cancellation depends on the operator’s terms (usually moving you to another day or a refund), so ask before you book.
The practical takeaway: do not leave the balloon flight to the last morning of your stay. Book it for the first morning, so that a cancellation still leaves you spare mornings. Watching balloons from a terrace also depends on flights taking place, so the shares above apply to guests in rooms with a balloon view as well. In our catalogue, 27 of the 43 hotels in Göreme list a “balloon view”; see Kelebek Cave Hotel and Travellers Cave Hotel for examples, or the full hotel list.
