An ATV tour, also called a quad tour after the four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle, is a guided group ride on tracks and open ground in the valleys around Göreme, most often timed for the late afternoon and sunset. It is dusty and noisy, it shares paths with walkers and horses, and the rules on age and driving licences vary by operator. None of our 80 catalogue records mentions ATV or quad tours; 5 list concierge or tour help. This guide describes the routes in general terms, the timing, the dust and mud, what to wear and the questions to ask. It names no operators and gives no prices.
What an ATV tour is
A tour is a small convoy behind a guide. Operators usually begin with a safety briefing and a short practice, then ride out on dirt tracks and open ground, with stops at viewpoints. Some let you ride your own machine, some carry a passenger behind the rider, and the length on offer differs from operator to operator. It is not a theme-park ride: the ground is uneven, the surface can be loose, and the guide sets the pace.
That is why the questions matter more than the machine. Ask who the guide is, how many riders each guide leads and what the briefing covers, because those answers differ far more than the vehicles do.
Where tours go
Operators name different valleys around Göreme and its viewpoints, and routes change with the season, the ground and the day’s traffic, so ask which valleys and which viewpoint your tour uses. The ground is the same soft tuff described in the walking guides, in the same protected landscape: UNESCO inscribed Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia in 1985.
Some practical consequences:
- Stay on the tracks. Tuff erodes, and the formations are fragile.
- Keep out of fenced areas and cultivated ground such as orchards and vineyards.
- Give way to people on foot and on horseback, and slow down when you meet them.
- Ask about the route if you also plan to walk: the hiking overview shows which valleys suit walkers, and the Rose Valley and Red Valley guide describes the same sunset light.
Sunset tours and timing
The late-afternoon slot is popular for two reasons: the low sun colours the rock pink and red, and the air is cooler than at midday. Sunset time shifts with the season, so the start time does too; ask for it on your dates. The sunset guide has the monthly sunshine figures. Remember that the temperature falls quickly once the sun is down.
| Month | Average maximum | Average minimum | Rainy days | For an ATV tour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 4.0 °C | −3.6 °C | 12 | icy ground; tours may not run |
| April | 16.0 °C | 5.1 °C | 12 | mud after rain |
| May | 20.6 °C | 8.9 °C | 13 | wettest month, 57.9 mm on average |
| July | 28.5 °C | 13.7 °C | 2 | dry and dusty; a warm evening |
| September | 24.5 °C | 10.5 °C | 3 | settled; dusty |
| October | 18.3 °C | 6.8 °C | 7 | cool at dusk; carry a warm layer |

Dust, mud and noise
Dry months make dust. July and August are the driest in the record, with 9.4 mm and 8.4 mm of rain on average against 57.9 mm in May, and a convoy of machines raises a cloud that the riders at the back ride through. Keep a gap behind the vehicle in front, and ask whether the guide rotates positions. In wet weather the same tracks turn to mud and slippery clay, and the risk moves from dust in your eyes to a skid.
The noise is part of the cost to others. A tour passes walkers, riders and the quiet of the valleys, so it helps to choose tours that keep to a modest group size and not to ride faster than the guide.
What to wear
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Closed shoes with grip | feet on footplates and loose ground; no sandals |
| Long trousers and a long-sleeved top | dust, sun, and a scrape if you slide |
| Eye protection | dust; clear lenses if you ride at dusk |
| A scarf or buff | over nose and mouth in the dust |
| A warm layer | the evening is cooler: the July average minimum is 13.7 °C |
| Gloves | in spring, autumn and winter |
| Nothing loose | no dangling scarves, straps or bags; tie back long hair |
Ask whether helmets are supplied and make sure the one you get fits.
Licence, age and safety
The rules differ by operator and can change, so treat the following as questions, not facts:
- Licence. Some operators ask riders to hold a valid driving licence; others do not. Ask what you must bring.
- Age. Minimum ages for riding and for riding as a passenger differ. Ask in writing, particularly if you travel with teenagers.
- Insurance. Check that your travel insurance covers motorised adventure activities, and ask what the operator’s own insurance covers.
- Alcohol. Do not ride after drinking. If you want a wine tasting the same day, plan it for afterwards; see wine tasting in Ürgüp.
- Health. Tell the operator about pregnancy, back, neck or heart problems before you book; a ride over rough ground jolts the body.
- Machines. The vehicles should look maintained, and the guide should explain the controls and how to stop.
Questions to ask before you book
- What is the route, and which viewpoint do we stop at?
- How long is the tour, and what time does it start on our date?
- How many riders per guide, and how many machines in all?
- What does the briefing cover, and is there a practice area?
- Are helmets provided, and in what sizes?
- What age and licence rules apply to riders and passengers?
- What happens if it rains or the ground is frozen: a refund or another day?
- Is hotel pick-up included?
If you would prefer to see the valleys more quietly, horse riding and walking share much of the same ground.
