There are five common places to watch the sunset in Cappadocia: Göreme’s own sunset viewpoint, the top of Uçhisar Castle, the Red Valley (Kızılçukur) viewpoint, Ortahisar, and the terrace of your own hotel. The catalogue helps most with the last one: 10 of the 80 records tick a terrace and 20 a valley view, but only 2 name the sunset itself, Taşkonak Cave House and Harman Cave Hotel. The 38 balloon views are about the morning. This guide gives the five options, a month-by-month look at sunshine, and the practical points that decide whether the evening works. It gives no sunset times, which change with the date, and no entry fees or opening hours.

What makes a good sunset here

Low light on soft rock. The tuff takes on pink and red as the sun drops, and it is what gives Rose Valley and Red Valley their names. Cloud. A clear western sky matters more than anything. Where you stand. A viewpoint with a wide western horizon beats one hemmed in by hills, so ask the hotel which direction a terrace faces. Timing. Arrive well before the sun goes down; the best colour can come after it touches the horizon, and the light fades fast.

Cloud is the part you can plan around. The table gives average sunshine and rainy days for Nevşehir, the nearest station in our climate file:

Month Sunshine, hours a day Rainy days
January 3.1 12
February 4.2 12
March 5.3 13
April 6.6 12
May 8.4 13
June 10.6 8
July 11.9 2
August 11.3 2
September 9.4 3
October 6.5 7
November 4.6 9
December 3.1 12

1. The Göreme sunset viewpoint

Göreme has its own viewpoint, usually called Göreme Sunset Point and sometimes given as Aydın Kırağı, a name that also turns up in a Gaferli street address: Artemis Cave Suites & Spa (Adults Only) is on Aydınkırağı Sokak. It is the obvious choice if you sleep in Göreme, where 43 of the 80 hotels are. Go well before sunset and ask your hotel for the route and whether to walk or take a taxi back; this guide does not give directions it cannot confirm. For the village see the Göreme guide.

2. Uçhisar Castle

The point usually described as the highest in the region gives the widest view, and the hours before sunset are a popular time. One thing matters more than the view: check whether the castle is open until sunset on your date, since opening arrangements change and this guide states none. The steps can be narrow, and the descent in fading light needs a phone torch. The climb, the view and 12 hotel distances are in the Uçhisar Castle guide.

3. Kızılçukur and the Red Valley

Kızılçukur (“red hollow”) looks over the valley whose rock takes on a deep red in low light, and the 3-day itinerary puts sunset here at the end of day 1. Without a car, allow for a taxi back; the valleys are poorly lit after dark. Seki Cave Hotel in Çavuşin lists Güllüdere and Kızıl Valley within walking distance, and Taşkonak Cave House describes sunsets over Rose Valley from its roof. For the walk itself see Rose Valley and Red Valley.

4. Ortahisar

Ortahisar Castle is a smaller rock of the same kind as Uçhisar’s, over a town with 2 hotel records against Uçhisar’s 19, so it is a quieter-looking alternative, although the catalogue cannot say how many day visitors come. Fosil Cave Hotel puts the castle about 253 m away. Opening arrangements again decide whether you can climb; the Ortahisar guide has the details.

5. Your own terrace

Ten records tick a terrace: 4 Oda Cave House, Taru Cave Suites and The Calypso Cave in Ürgüp; Dream of Cappadocia, Leda Stone House, Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel and My Story Cave Hotel in Uçhisar; Konak Bezirhane Cave Otel and Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa; and Logos Cave Cappadocia in Göreme. Twenty tick a valley view, and a 21st, Castle Cave Hotel, names one in its highlights. Only two records name the sunset:

  • Taşkonak Cave House (Göreme, 10 rooms): a new rooftop terrace that looks out to sunsets over Rose Valley and to sunrise balloon flights.
  • Harman Cave Hotel (Göreme): a terrace with valley views at sunset.

A terrace costs no walk or taxi, which is its great advantage on a cold or hazy evening. The amenity lists do not say which way a terrace faces, so ask. In Ürgüp, Temenni Hill is the usual alternative to the Göreme points; three records, 4 Oda, Kayata and Taru, carry the Temenni neighbourhood name.

A simple evening plan

Leave the hotel in the late afternoon, reach the viewpoint well before sunset, stay on after the sun has gone for the colour that follows it, and walk or ride back with a torch. A hotel terrace restaurant can fold dinner into the plan: Kale Konak Cappadocia in Uçhisar describes one with panoramas of Cappadocia and Pigeon Valley, and 29 of the 80 records list a restaurant of some kind.

If the evening turns cloudy, the cost of a wasted trip is lowest from your own terrace. A good fallback is a warm-up indoors: 7 records list a Turkish bath (Artemis Cave Suites & Spa, Aydınlı Cave Hotel, Kale Konak Cappadocia, Kelebek Cave Hotel, Secret Hill Cave Suites, The Kingdom of Cappadocia and Uçhisar Palace In Cappadocia), which suits a grey evening after a long day outdoors.

Practical points

  • Layers. Evenings cool fast. In July the Nevşehir average runs from 28.5 °C by day to 13.7 °C at night; in October it is 18.3 °C against 6.8 °C.
  • Descents. Carry a phone torch and keep to paths in fading light.
  • Return. Sort the taxi before you go, not at dusk.
  • Respect the rock. Do not climb on chimneys for a photograph.

Where to stay for the sunset

Mithra Cave Cappadocia, pictured at the top, lists a view of the balloons at sunrise, a restaurant and a spa. Taşkonak Cave House and Harman Cave Hotel are the two records that name the sunset. Kale Konak Cappadocia in Uçhisar has a terrace restaurant with panoramas of Cappadocia and Pigeon Valley. Every record is on the hotel list. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.

Questions answered in this article

Where is the best place to watch the sunset in Cappadocia?

There is no single answer, since it depends on where you stay and how much you want to walk. Five common choices are the Göreme sunset viewpoint, Uçhisar Castle, the Red Valley (Kızılçukur) viewpoint, Ortahisar and your own hotel terrace.

Which hotels mention the sunset?

Two of the 80 records: Taşkonak Cave House, whose rooftop looks out to sunsets over Rose Valley, and Harman Cave Hotel, whose terrace has valley views at sunset. Both are in Göreme.

How many hotels have a terrace or valley view?

Ten records tick a terrace and 20 tick a valley view in their amenity lists; a 21st, Castle Cave Hotel, names a valley view in its highlights. Balloon views, ticked by 38, concern the morning, not the evening.

When is sunset most likely to be clear?

Summer. In Nevşehir sunshine averages 11.9 hours a day in July and 3.1 in January, with 2 rainy days in July against 12 in January (MGM, 1959–2025). Sunset time itself shifts through the year, so check the date.

Do I need a car for the viewpoints?

Not for Uçhisar Castle or the Göreme viewpoint if you sleep nearby. For Kızılçukur allow for a taxi back after dark. Ask your hotel for the way and the return plan before you leave.
