Uçhisar Castle is a huge natural rock above the village of Uçhisar, hollowed out with rooms and passages and climbed by steps; it is usually described as the highest point in the region. From the top the view opens over the valleys and, on clear days, towards Mount Erciyes. Uçhisar has 19 hotels in our catalogue, and 12 of the 80 records state a distance to the castle, from about 138 m to about 20 km; four more describe it in words. This guide gives the climb, the light and the distances in one place. It contains no prices, no opening hours and no entry fee, which change and should be checked on the day.

A rock, not a built castle

The word hisar means fortress, but Uçhisar’s is not a fortress in the European sense. It is a natural mass of tuff that people hollowed out over centuries, a honeycomb of rooms, passages and openings that served as refuge and lookout over the surrounding land. Seen from the village it looks like an oversized fairy chimney. Ortahisar, further along the road towards Ürgüp, has a smaller rock of the same kind; see the Ortahisar guide.

The climb

The way up is by steps. Parts of the route are narrow and uneven, and the stone can be smooth where many feet have passed, so shoes with grip matter more than fitness. A few practical points:

  • It is not pushchair-friendly. Anyone with limited mobility should ask the hotel about the current arrangements before committing.
  • Midday is the worst time. In Nevşehir the average July maximum is 28.5 °C with about 12 hours of sun a day (MGM, 1959–2025), and the rock offers little shade.
  • Wind and cold. The top is exposed. In January the average minimum is −3.6 °C, and steps can be icy; check conditions before going.
  • Access changes. Sections may be fenced or closed. Follow signs and staff, and do not climb into unmarked openings.

The view

From the top you see the roofs of Uçhisar below, Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik) falling towards Göreme, and a wide spread of tuff country beyond. The catalogue gives one confirmation of the long view: Karlık Cave Suite lists views of both Güvercinlik Valley and Mount Erciyes. Haze, dust and cloud decide how far you will see, so a clear morning after rain is a better bet than a hot, hazy afternoon.

Eight of the 19 Uçhisar hotels list a balloon view, so some visitors see the morning flights from their own terrace and use the castle for the afternoon. Whether you can be on the rock at dawn depends on the opening arrangements, which this guide does not state.

Sunset

Sunset is the busiest time, and the reason is simple: low sun colours the rock and the valleys below. Arrive well before the sun goes down, not at the minute, because the climb takes time and popular viewpoints fill up at this hour, and plan the descent in the last light with a phone torch. Sunset time shifts through the year, and cloud matters. Sunshine averages 11.9 hours a day in July but 3.1 in January, with 2 rainy days in July against 12 in January (MGM), so winter sunsets are a gamble. Evenings cool quickly after hot days: the July average minimum is 13.7 °C. For other viewpoints see where to watch the sunset, and for the seasons when to visit.

How far is the castle from your hotel?

Twelve records state a distance. They do not say how it was measured, so treat the figures as approximate:

Hotel Town (area) Castle distance in the record
Kilim Pansiyon Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 138 m
Wings Cappadocia Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 265 m
Dream of Cappadocia Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 300 m
Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 300 m
Simera In Cappadocia Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 352 m
Cappadocia Fairy Chimneys Selfie Cave Hotels Uçhisar (Tekelli) about 400 m
Leda Stone House Uçhisar (Aşağı) about 518 m
Uçhisar Palace In Cappadocia Uçhisar (Yukarı) about 1.2 km
Chiaro Cappadocia Uçhisar (area not listed) about 1.3 km
Soho Cappadocia Göreme (Aydınlı-Orta) 2.9 km
Göreme Cave Lodge Göreme (Aydınlı Orta) about 3.5 km
Yılkı Cave Suites Mustafapaşa about 20 km

Four more records use words: My Story Cave Hotel says a five-minute walk, Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel says walking distance, Karlık Cave Suite says at the foot of the castle, and Göreme Cave Suites says a short drive. Flavia Cappadocia Hotel and Simera In Cappadocia mention views of the castle. Vigor Cappadocia (ex Elite Cave), the property pictured at the top, states no castle distance but lists both a valley and a balloon view.

Uçhisar or Ortahisar?

Both castles are rock honeycombed with rooms, so the question is scale and setting. Uçhisar’s is larger and usually described as the higher, and it stands over a village with 19 hotels in the catalogue. Ortahisar’s is smaller, rises above a town with 2 hotel records, and makes a quicker stop; Fosil Cave Hotel puts it about 253 m away. If you have time for one climb and want the view, choose Uçhisar; if you pass through Ortahisar anyway, the smaller rock adds a useful comparison.

Castle first, then Pigeon Valley

A common plan is to climb the castle early or late and then walk down Pigeon Valley to Göreme, which saves a taxi if you are sleeping in Göreme (43 of the 80 hotels) and costs one back if you are staying in Uçhisar. The valley walk is described in Pigeon Valley: from Uçhisar down to Göreme. The 3-day itinerary puts castle and valley together on day 3.

Where to stay for the castle

By their records: Kilim Pansiyon is the closest, at about 138 m. My Story Cave Hotel has 8 individually decorated rooms, a restaurant, a terrace and a 24-hour reception, five minutes on foot from the rock. Wings Cappadocia is about 265 m away and lists balloon and valley views. Karlık Cave Suite has 17 rooms at the foot of the castle. All 19 Uçhisar hotels are in the Uçhisar section of the hotel list, and the village is covered in the Uçhisar guide. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.

Questions answered in this article

What is Uçhisar Castle?

A huge natural rock outcrop above the village, hollowed out with rooms and passages over the centuries rather than built as a castle. It is usually described as the highest point in the region.

How do you get to the top?

By steps. Parts are narrow and uneven, so it is a poor choice with a pushchair or limited mobility. Check the official source for opening days and entry arrangements; this guide states no fee or hours.

When is the best time to go?

Mornings and the hours before sunset, when the sun is low and the climb is cooler. Sunset time shifts through the year, so look up the time for your date and arrive well before it.

Which hotels are within walking distance of the castle?

Seven of the nine Uçhisar records that give a figure are within about 520 m, from Kilim Pansiyon at about 138 m to Leda Stone House at about 518 m. My Story Cave Hotel says five minutes on foot and Karlık Cave Suite says at the foot of the castle.

What can you see from the top?

The valleys around Uçhisar and, on clear days, Mount Erciyes; Karlık Cave Suite lists views of both Güvercinlik (Pigeon) Valley and Erciyes. Haze and cloud change what you will see.
