Airport transfers in Cappadocia: shuttle, hotel transfer or taxi

A hotel transfer, a shared shuttle and a taxi will each get you from a Cappadocia airport to your bed, and the right one depends on when you land, how many of you there are, how much luggage you carry and which airport you use. Of the 80 hotels in our catalogue, 29 list an airport transfer. This guide compares the three options, names the 29 hotels, sets the two airports in distance terms and gives the questions to settle in writing. It names no companies and gives no prices or times.

Three ways to reach the hotel

A shared shuttle can be a simple choice for one or two travellers with light luggage, though the journey may be longer because of the other stops. A private transfer or a hotel transfer suits a family, a group with heavy bags, or a late arrival. A taxi is the fallback if plans change. Three records mention a shuttle or transfers without the tick: Göreme Cave Lodge (a 24-hour front desk with airport transfers), Zara Cave Hotel +10 (an in-house agency for VIP transfers) and Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel, whose record says its airport shuttle is a paid service. The two airports in distance terms

Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is in Nevşehir province, the same province as the hotel villages. Only two records state a distance to it: Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class in Uçhisar about 35 km, and Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa about 52 km. The two records suggest that the farther east you stay, the longer the ride from NAV.

Kayseri Erkilet (ASR) is in the neighbouring province, across the provincial border, and no record gives a distance from it. It lies farther from Göreme and Uçhisar than NAV does, so expect a longer ride and ask for the time and the price. Matching the option to the arrival

• Afternoon arrival, two of you, light bags. A hotel transfer if your hotel lists one; otherwise a shared shuttle or a taxi.
• Late-night arrival. Choose a hotel that lists both a transfer and a 24-hour reception. Seven do: Artemis Cave Suites & Spa in Göreme, Dream of Cappadocia and My Story Cave Hotel in Uçhisar, Kayata Cave Suites, The Calypso Cave and Ürgüp Evi in Ürgüp, and Nujel’m Cappadocia in Mustafapaşa.
• A family or heavy bags. A private or hotel transfer, with the number of bags and any child seat stated in writing.
• Early-morning arrival. Check-in is from 14:00 at 75 of the 80 hotels, so ask whether the room will be ready and where your bags can wait; only one record, Konak Bezirhane Cave Otel, ticks luggage storage.
• Morning flight home. Agree the pick-up time with the hotel the day before and leave a margin, since the hotel may be a long way from the airport.

Departure day and delays

Check-out is at 12:00 at 51 of the 80 hotels and at 11:00 at 29, so in most records it falls close to noon. If your flight is in the evening, ask in advance where your bags can wait after you leave the room; only one record ticks luggage storage, which does not mean the others will refuse, only that the question needs asking. If your flight is in the morning, settle the bill the evening before and ask whether breakfast can be served early or packed. Breakfast is included at 66 hotels, but the records give no serving times.

With a delay, the real question is who opens the door. Only 15 hotels list a 24-hour reception, so at the other 65 you should say plainly that you will arrive after midnight and get the driver’s waiting rule in writing. If you connect through another airport, send the connection details too, because a late first flight moves the transfer. Always add the village to the address: “Göreme”, “Uçhisar” or “Ürgüp” guides a driver better than a street name.

What to send the hotel

• Your flight number, date, arrival time and the airport (NAV or ASR).
• The number of passengers, bags and any child seats.
• Whether you pay the driver or the hotel, and in which form.
• What happens if the flight is delayed, and how long the driver waits.
• The driver’s name or a phone number to use on landing.
• The return pick-up time, confirmed again the day before.
