Getting around Cappadocia by dolmuş and bus
Dolmuş minibuses and buses between Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Nevşehir and Avanos: how they work, where they help, evenings and taxis. No timetables or fares.

A dolmuş is a shared minibus that follows a set route and stops where passengers ask. In Cappadocia, minibuses and buses generally link the main towns along the main roads, and they are the plain way to go between Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Nevşehir, and from Göreme toward Avanos. This guide explains how they work, where they help and where they do not. Our catalogue holds no timetables, fares or route names: the only transport detail in its 80 records is three bus-station distances, so what follows about the lines is general knowledge that you should confirm with your hotel.
How a dolmuş works
The usual pattern is simple. The minibus shows its destination on the front or the windscreen; you wave it down, or wait at a stop, and say your destination to the driver. You tell the driver where you want to get off, the driver stops there, and you pay on board. Fares and change are not something we state, so ask the driver or your hotel what to expect, and carry small notes. Luggage space is limited, and a big suitcase on a steep seat is awkward.
Buses are different: intercity buses call at stations, and in our region those are the bus stations of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Göreme, as the getting there guide notes. You buy a ticket with the company, and routes, times and fares vary by company.
The lines that matter
| Corridor | Villages along it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Main road | Nevşehir, Uçhisar, Göreme, Ürgüp | Uçhisar is the first hotel village on the road from Nevşehir towards Göreme; Ürgüp lies beyond Göreme |
| Northern line | Göreme, Çavuşin, Avanos | Çavuşin lies between Göreme and Avanos; Zelve, Paşabağı and Devrent are on this side, see the Avanos guide |
| Ürgüp side | Ürgüp, Mustafapaşa, Ortahisar | Ask your hotel how to reach these from the main road; there may be local minibuses or you may need a taxi |
Treat the table as a map of where to ask, not a promise of service. Routes, stops and times change with the season.
Bus stations and where they are
Göreme has its own bus station, and so do Ürgüp and Nevşehir. Two Göreme records state a distance: Naif Hotel about 354 m and Logos Cave Cappadocia about 394 m. For Ürgüp, Taru Cave Suites gives about 708 m to the bus station. No other record states one, so if you arrive by bus, ask your hotel how far it is and whether it is uphill; the Göreme village guide describes the neighbourhoods. With a suitcase, a short taxi ride from the station may be easier than a walk on steep streets.
Frequency, evenings and winter
Services generally run more often by day than in the evening, and they are thinner in winter than in summer. Our records hold no timetable, so we cannot say how often. Build the plan this way:
- Ask the hotel for the last departure back to your village, and for a taxi number.
- Do not make the last minibus your only way home. A late dinner or a sunset can push you past it.
- Plan sunsets and evenings with a taxi. The valleys are poorly lit after dark, and the viewpoints are not on the minibus routes.
- Leave a margin in winter. In Nevşehir the average January minimum is −3.6 °C and there are 12 rainy days in the month on average (MGM, 1959–2025), which can slow roads and thin services.
Fifteen hotels list a 24-hour reception, so someone is at the desk if you return late.
What a dolmuş cannot do
Minibuses run on main roads. The valley trailheads, the sunset viewpoints and many sights lie off them, so they are reached on foot or by taxi. The Open-Air Museum is a walk or a short ride from Göreme hotels: the records state distances from about 300 m to 1.8 km. A balloon flight starts with a hotel pick-up before dawn, which no public service covers. And one-way walks, such as Pigeon Valley between Göreme and Uçhisar, usually end with a taxi back.
Riding tips
- Know your stop. Write down the name of your stop and your hotel’s street, and show the driver the address on your phone.
- Use an offline map so that you can see when you are close to your stop, since signal can drop between villages.
- Mark the return point. Note where you were dropped off, because the minibus back may not stop in the same place.
- Ask before boarding if you have a pushchair or a heavy bag; space is limited.
- Keep valuables close, as on any crowded public transport.
- Check on the day. Ask the hotel again in the morning, since routes and times change with the season.
Taxis, the other half
Taxis fill the gaps in the evening, at trailheads and with luggage. Ask your hotel to call one, or to give you a number, and agree the fare or confirm that the meter is running before you set off. Tell the driver the village first, then the hotel’s name and street; fourteen of the records end their address in “Nevşehir Merkez”, which is the postal district and not the city, so say “Göreme” or “Uçhisar” first. For a longer day, compare a taxi with a tour or a hire car: see renting a car and driving and the airport transfer guide.
A plan that works without a car
In the 3-day itinerary, day 1 around Göreme needs little transport. On the other days, use the minibus where the road is straightforward (between villages) and a taxi or a tour for the sights that lie off it. Fix the return before you start each leg, and keep one day’s margin for a late bus or a cancelled balloon morning.
Where to stay
If you rely on buses, a hotel near the station helps. Naif Hotel in Göreme lists the station about 354 m away, parking and an airport transfer. Logos Cave Cappadocia lists the station about 394 m away, a 24-hour reception and tour help. In Ürgüp, Taru Cave Suites lists the station about 708 m away, a 24-hour reception and tour help. Hidden Cave Hotel, pictured at the top, is in central Göreme with 13 historic rooms. Questions answered in this article
Is there public transport between the Cappadocia villages?
Minibuses (dolmuş) and buses generally link Nevşehir, Uçhisar, Göreme and Ürgüp along the main road, and a line runs from Göreme through Çavuşin to Avanos. Our records hold no timetables, so confirm routes and last departures with your hotel.
How do I pay, and how do I get off?
A dolmuş normally stops on request: tell the driver your village or stop in advance, and pay on board. Ask the driver or your hotel what the fare is and where the return minibus stops.
Do dolmuş run in the evening?
Services generally thin out after the afternoon and in winter, and our records hold no timetable. Do not make the last minibus your only way back; ask your hotel for the last departure and a taxi number.
Where are the bus stations?
Göreme, Ürgüp and Nevşehir each have one. Two Göreme records give a distance to the Göreme station (Naif Hotel about 354 m, Logos Cave Cappadocia about 394 m) and one Ürgüp record to the Ürgüp station (Taru Cave Suites about 708 m).
Can I reach the valleys and sunset points by dolmuş?
Not directly. Minibuses run on the main roads; valley trailheads and viewpoints are reached on foot or by taxi, so agree the return before you set off.
