Renting a car and driving in Cappadocia
Renting a car in Cappadocia: 60 of 80 hotels list parking, village streets are narrow and winter brings frost. Distances from hotel records, no prices.

You do not need a car in Cappadocia, but it changes the trip. Around Göreme many sights are on foot or a short taxi ride away; a car pays off on the days that run through several towns. Sixty of the 80 hotels in our catalogue list parking, so the car usually has somewhere to sleep, but village streets are narrow and the car may not reach your door. This guide uses distances the hotel records state, counts parking by town and covers winter. It gives no prices and no road distances of its own.
How far things are
The records give a few drive times and distances, and they show how compact the region is. These are stated by the hotels, and the way they are measured is not given.
| Hotel | Town | What the record states |
|---|---|---|
| Kayata Cave Suites | Ürgüp | about 1 minute by car to Göreme National Park |
| Vita Cave Suites | Ortahisar | about 4 minutes by car to the Open-Air Museum |
| Logos Cave Cappadocia | Göreme | a 4-minute drive to the Open-Air Museum |
| Göreme Cave Suites | Göreme | about 5 minutes by car to Göreme National Park |
| Konak Bezirhane Cave Otel | Mustafapaşa | about 8 minutes to Göreme National Park |
| Serene Premium Stone House | Göreme | about 15 minutes by car to the park and the museum |
| Nujel’m Cappadocia | Mustafapaşa | 5.5 km to Göreme National Park |
| Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class | Uçhisar | 11 km to Zelve, 35 km to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport |
| Yılkı Cave Suites | Mustafapaşa | 17 km to Zelve, about 52 km to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport |
The pattern: the records put Göreme National Park a few minutes from hotels in Göreme, Ortahisar and Ürgüp, while Zelve and the airport are a much longer drive. No record gives a distance from Kayseri Erkilet Airport.
Parking, by town
Parking is ticked at 60 of the 80 hotels:
| Town | Hotels | Listing parking | Not listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Göreme | 43 | 30 | 13 |
| Uçhisar | 19 | 12 | 7 |
| Ürgüp | 9 | 9 | 0 |
| Mustafapaşa | 4 | 4 | 0 |
| Çavuşin | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| Ortahisar | 2 | 2 | 0 |
| Total | 80 | 60 | 20 |
If you plan to drive, note the 20 that do not list parking. In Göreme these are Arcus Cappadocia, Artemis Cave Suites & Spa, Aza Cave Hotel, Bedrock Cave Hotel, Carus Cappadocia, Doors of Cappadocia, Göreme Cave Suites, Henna Hotel, Hidden Cave Hotel, Soho Cappadocia, Taşkonak Cave House, Tulip Cave Suites and Zara Cave Hotel +10; in Uçhisar, Dream of Cappadocia, Hu of Cappadocia, Juno Cappadocia, Kilim Pansiyon, Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel, Vigor Cappadocia and Wings Cappadocia. A missing tick does not mean there is nowhere to leave a car, but ask. Four records say parking is free: Fosil Cave Hotel, My Story Cave Hotel, Nujel’m Cappadocia and Vita Cave Suites; the others are silent on price. For more, see hotels with parking.
Narrow streets and steps
The villages are built on slopes, and their streets are narrow. A listed car park may be at the foot of a hill, and a vehicle may not reach some hotels’ doors, as the getting there guide notes. Before you arrive, ask the hotel for the exact parking address or a map pin, how far it is from your room, how many steps are in between and who carries the bags. Do not rely on a navigation app alone for the last stretch; ask for directions from the car park to the door.
Renting: what to settle first
Hire options exist at the airports and in the regional towns. Before you commit:
- Pick-up and drop-off. Where, and at what time? If you fly into one airport and out of the other, ask what a one-way return costs.
- The driver’s licence. Ask the company which licences it accepts and what its age and experience rules are.
- Money. Ask about the deposit, the insurance cover and what the excess is, and what the fuel policy is.
- The car. Ask whether it is a manual or an automatic, if that matters to you, and how the car is equipped for winter.
- Mileage and extra drivers. Ask whether there is a limit and whether a second driver is covered.
On the road
Driving is on the right. Balloon mornings put pick-up vehicles on the roads before sunrise, and in the villages walkers share the street with cars, so drive slowly. After dark the valleys are poorly lit, and a phone navigation app that works offline is a sensible back-up where signal is weak. Wine tastings and driving do not mix: plan any tasting for the end of the day with a transfer or taxi arranged, as our wine guide advises.
Using the car well
A car is most useful on days that cross towns and least useful inside the villages. Park once and walk: in Göreme and Uçhisar the sights and restaurants are close together, so leave the car at the hotel on days that stay in the village, and take it out for the northern line of Çavuşin, Zelve, Paşabağı and Devrent (day 2 of the 3-day plan) or the southern line of Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa (day 3). Watch the light: sunset time shifts with the season and the valleys are poorly lit after dark, so start the drive back with daylight to spare. Fill the tank and charge your phone before a long loop, since signal can drop in deep valleys.
Winter
A car is less comfortable in winter. Averages for Nevşehir (MGM, 1959–2025):
| Month | Average maximum | Average minimum | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 6.2 °C | −1.3 °C | 12 |
| January | 4.0 °C | −3.6 °C | 12 |
| February | 5.5 °C | −2.6 °C | 12 |
| March | 10.3 °C | 0.7 °C | 13 |
The record low is −23.6 °C (February) and the deepest snow on record is 64 cm (2 February 1992). Frost on slopes, ice on shaded corners and wet stone on steps are the risks; keep a margin on the day you travel, and see the weather page for every month.
With or without a car
Without a car, day 1 around Göreme works on foot or with a short taxi ride, while days 2 and 3 of the 3-day itinerary need a tour or taxi. Shared minibuses help on the main road; see getting around by dolmuş and bus. For airport arrivals, the airport transfer guide compares the options, and you can hire a car later from a town.
Where to stay
For drivers, the hotels below all list parking, and two of them state it is free. Naif Hotel, pictured at the top, lists parking and an airport transfer in Göreme’s Aydınlı Orta area, with the bus station about 354 m away. Vita Cave Suites in Ortahisar has free parking. Nujel’m Cappadocia in Mustafapaşa has free parking and heated floors. Divan Cave House in Göreme lists parking and 12 rooms. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee by its own account; this guide takes no commission. Questions answered in this article
Do I need a car in Cappadocia?
Not essential. Around Göreme many sights are within walking distance or a short taxi ride, but days that run through several towns, such as Çavuşin to Avanos or Ürgüp to Mustafapaşa, are easier by car; without one you need a tour or taxis.
How many hotels have parking?
60 of the 80 list parking, including every hotel in Ürgüp (9), Mustafapaşa (4), Çavuşin (3) and Ortahisar (2), 30 of 43 in Göreme and 12 of 19 in Uçhisar. Four records state that parking is free.
Can the car reach the hotel door?
Not always. Village streets are narrow and some hotels stand on slopes, so ask where to park and how far it is from your room. The records do not say.
Is driving in Cappadocia difficult in winter?
It can be. In Nevşehir the average January minimum is −3.6 °C and the average maximum 4.0 °C, with 12 rainy days in the month (MGM, 1959–2025). Frost and ice on slopes are the risk; ask the rental company how the car is equipped.
Can I drive after a wine tasting?
No. Plan the tasting for the end of the day and arrange a transfer, a driver or a taxi.
