Nevşehir is the provincial capital, the administrative and commercial city of the region, and none of the 80 hotels in our catalogue is in it. They all stand in six villages and towns: Göreme (43), Uçhisar (19), Ürgüp (9), Mustafapaşa (4), Çavuşin (3) and Ortahisar (2). The city is still on most travellers’ route, because the airport, the bus terminal and everyday services are tied to it. This guide covers what Nevşehir offers a visitor, why 14 hotel addresses nonetheless say Nevşehir, and what its weather record shows.

Why some hotel addresses say Nevşehir

Fourteen of the 80 records end their address in “Nevşehir Merkez”, “Nevşehir Center” or “Nevşehir Central District”: 11 in Göreme (Arcus Cappadocia, Bedrock Cave Hotel, Chelebi Cave House, Harman Cave Hotel, Kayataş Cave Suites, Koza Cave Hotel, Local Cave House, Serene Premium Stone House, Soho Cappadocia, Taşkonak Cave House and Terra Cave Hotel) and 3 in Uçhisar (The Kingdom of Cappadocia, Vigor Cappadocia and Wings Cappadocia). That is the postal district, the central district of Nevşehir province, and it does not mean the hotel is in the city. When you give an address to a taxi driver, a courier or a car-hire company, use the village name and the neighbourhood, and say “Göreme” or “Uçhisar” first.

Arriving: airport and bus terminal

Cappadocia is served by two airports: Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) and Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), which the Kayseri guide covers. Only two hotel records state a distance to NAV: Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class in Uçhisar gives about 35 km, and Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa about 52 km. 29 of the 80 hotels list an airport transfer, and none of them says whether it serves Kayseri as well. Intercity buses call at the bus stations of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Göreme; check routes and times with the bus company. The full picture, with the transfer count by town, is in how to get to Cappadocia.

What the city offers a visitor

Nevşehir is a working city rather than a sightseeing one, and a half-day is enough. The things people usually come for:

  • The Damat İbrahim Paşa complex. The name means “New City”: in the early 18th century the grand vizier Damat İbrahim Paşa, a native of the place, had the town rebuilt. The complex that bears his name includes a mosque, a madrasa and a library.
  • The castle hill. The castle rises over the old centre and gives a view over the city. Check whether the site is open and how you reach it.
  • The Nevşehir Museum. The provincial museum holds archaeological and ethnographic collections of the region. Check opening days before you go.
  • Services. As in any provincial capital, the city has banks, supermarkets, shopping centres and a hospital, which the villages do not offer in the same range. If you need a service the village lacks, this is the town.

For a plan, pair the museum with the complex and keep the castle hill for the cooler end of the day; in midsummer the average maximum is 28.5 °C (MGM). Because Nevşehir is a working city, shops and offices keep ordinary business hours that this guide does not list, so check before you go if you need a specific counter or shop.

Nevşehir also sits on the way to the underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, which lie to its south.

Nevşehir’s weather record

The climate file the guide uses is the Nevşehir station of the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), 1959–2025. Four months give the shape of the year:

Month Average max Average min Sunshine, hours a day Rainy days Precipitation
January 4.0 °C −3.6 °C 3.1 12 45.4 mm
April 16.0 °C 5.1 °C 6.6 12 50.2 mm
July 28.5 °C 13.7 °C 11.9 2 9.4 mm
October 18.3 °C 6.8 °C 6.5 7 28.0 mm

The record January low is −21.2 °C and the record July high 39.5 °C. These are city-station figures, so village conditions can differ a little, but the pattern holds: cold winters, a dry, sunny midsummer. For every month see when to visit Cappadocia, and for current conditions the weather page.

Why stay in a village, not in the city

The sights, the balloon launch fields and the hotel catalogue are all in the villages. If you arrive by bus at Nevşehir and are heading to Uçhisar or Göreme, ask your hotel which transport it suggests and whether it lists a transfer. Uçhisar is the first hotel village on the road from Nevşehir towards Göreme; the Uçhisar guide covers its 19 hotels, and the Göreme village guide the 43 beyond.

Where to stay near Nevşehir

If you want to be close to the city, the Uçhisar hotels are the nearest in the catalogue. Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class lists an airport transfer and states about 35 km to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport. My Story Cave Hotel lists a 24-hour reception and an airport transfer together. In Göreme, Terra Cave Hotel is about 300 m from the town centre by its record. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.
