Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV): which airport for Cappadocia?

Two airports serve Cappadocia, Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) and Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), and for most travellers the ticket decides, not the map: whichever airline flies from your city on your dates settles it. What our hotel records can add is narrower than that and more useful than it sounds. All 80 hotels in the catalogue stand in Nevşehir province, two of them state a distance to NAV, none mentions Kayseri or Erkilet, and 29 list an airport transfer without saying which airport it serves. This guide sets out what that means, where the transfer ticks fall by town and which questions to put to a hotel before you buy a flight. It gives no fares, flight times or timetables, because the catalogue holds none.

Compare the whole journey, not the flight

A short flight into the farther airport can spend on the road the time it saves in the air, so count door to door: the flight, the wait for bags, the ground leg and the hour at which you arrive. Airline sites show which airport each carrier uses on your dates, and services change by season, so look at the days you will actually travel, not at a typical week. What the records say about distance

Two records state a distance to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport. Hu of Cappadocia - Special Class in Uçhisar gives about 35 km, and Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa gives about 52 km. Seventeen kilometres separate the two figures, which shows that even within the hotel area the ride from NAV depends on the village, and that you should ask for the figure for your own hotel and not borrow one.

For ASR there is nothing to quote. On a map it lies on the Kayseri side of the provincial border and is the farther of the two from Göreme and Uçhisar, but without a figure in the records this guide gives no distance and no time. Ask the hotel or the transfer company for both, and ask whether the price changes with the airport.

Where the transfer ticks fall

The count comes from the amenity lists and may be incomplete. The last column adds the hotels that also list a 24-hour reception, which matters for a late landing.

The shares run from 21% in Uçhisar to 75% in Mustafapaşa, and the records do not explain the gap, so do not read it as a promise. Questions to settle before you buy

• Which airport does the transfer serve? NAV, ASR or both, and does the price differ?
• How long is the ride from that airport? Ask for the time, and for the last pick-up of the day.
• What if the flight is late? Only 15 hotels list a 24-hour reception, so say so plainly if you will land after midnight.
• The return. Agree the pick-up time with the hotel for your flight and confirm it again the day before. Check-out is at 12:00 at 51 of the 80 hotels and at 11:00 at 29, so an evening flight leaves you hours to fill and bags to store; only one record ticks luggage storage, so ask.
• People and bags. Give the numbers, and any child seat, in writing.
• A hire car. Ask the company whether it can collect at one airport and take the car back at the other, and what that costs. Sixty of the 80 hotels list parking, but check how far it is from your room. See renting a car and driving.

Flying in through one, out through the other

If the dates fit better, price an arrival at one airport and a departure from the other. Each leg then needs its own transfer, so confirm in writing that your hotel will collect you from the airport you land at and take you to the one you leave from. The records name no hotel that serves both, which is why the question has to be asked.

Keep a margin before the flight home

Give the last morning a rule: no balloon flight on the morning of your flight home. The decision to fly is taken each morning, and in the 2025 calendar (which runs from 1 January 2025 to 2 August 2026) 142 of 365 days had no flight at all, 39%. A cancelled morning cannot be moved if you leave that day, so keep a spare morning before you go; balloon flight days shows the pattern by month. Whichever airport you leave from, leave a margin for the road, and if it is ASR, ask how long the road takes.

Three simple cases

• Two similar tickets. NAV is the airport the records can say most about, so when the tickets are equal it is the one you can plan most precisely.
• A cheaper or better-timed ticket to ASR. Take it if it suits you, but settle the transfer and its price first; the saving is real only once the ground leg is arranged.
