A hamam is the Turkish bath: a heated room where you sweat, are washed and scrubbed, and then rest. Nine of the 80 hotels in our catalogue mention one. Seven tick “Turkish bath (hamam)”, four of them in Göreme and three in Uçhisar, and two more name a Turkish bath in their highlights. Twelve tick a spa, which is a different thing, and only five records tick both. This guide describes a visit step by step, covers etiquette and health cautions and lists the nine hotels by town. The records give no hours, treatment lists or prices, and this guide gives none either.

What a hamam visit is like

In a traditional hamam the rooms run from cool to hot. You change in the first, put on a thin cotton wrap called a peştamal, and move through a warm room to the hot room, the sıcaklık. At the centre there is often a heated marble platform, the göbek taşı, where you lie and sweat. Then an attendant, called a tellak in men’s sections and a natır in women’s, washes you, scrubs your skin with a rough mitt, the kese, and often finishes with a soapy foam wash. You rinse, wrap up and rest, usually with tea.

A hotel hamam is a smaller version of this, and it may be a single room. Ask what the programme includes (the scrub, the foam, a massage), how long it lasts and whether you are alone or with other guests. Allow time, and do not plan a tight schedule around it.

Etiquette

  • Dress. The wrap is standard, and swimwear underneath is common. House rules differ, so ask.
  • Privacy. Traditional public hamams have separate sections or hours for men and women. Hotel hamams are often booked by the hour for a person, couple or family, so ask who will be there and who attends you.
  • Skin. Say if you are sunburnt or have a skin condition; a scrub on sunburnt skin hurts, and fresh shaving can irritate.
  • Tipping. Tipping the attendant is customary in Türkiye. Ask the hotel what is usual.
  • Behaviour. Keep your voice low, do not stare and leave phones outside unless the hotel says otherwise.
  • Hygiene. Rinse as the attendant directs and do not drop the wrap on the floor.

Health cautions

The heat is the point, and also the risk. Take extra care, or ask a doctor first, if you are pregnant, have a heart or blood-pressure condition, have a fever or are prone to fainting. Do not go after alcohol or straight after a heavy meal. Drink water before and after, sit down if you feel dizzy and leave the hot room at once if the dizziness does not pass. In winter, give yourself time to cool down before going out; the January average minimum in Nevşehir is −3.6 °C (MGM, 1959–2025).

Hamam or spa?

A spa tick tells you less than a hamam tick, because a spa may mean massage, a sauna or a pool. Twelve records tick “Spa”: five of them also tick a hamam (Artemis Cave Suites & Spa (Adults Only), Aydınlı Cave Hotel, Kale Konak Cappadocia, Kelebek Cave Hotel and The Kingdom of Cappadocia). Two tick a hamam without a spa (Secret Hill Cave Suites and Uçhisar Palace In Cappadocia), and seven tick a spa without a hamam. If a hamam matters to you, look for the word “hamam” or “Turkish bath” and then ask what the spa contains.

The nine hotels, by town

Town, area Hotel What the record says
Göreme, Gaferli Artemis Cave Suites & Spa (Adults Only) underground hamam and spa; rooftop restaurant and bar; adults only
Göreme, Aydınlı-Orta Aydınlı Cave Hotel hamam, spa and restaurant; family rooms; restored historic cave rooms
Göreme, Aydınlı Kelebek Cave Hotel 36 rooms; full-service spa with sauna, hamam and seasonal outdoor pool
Göreme, Isalı-Gaferli-Avcılar Secret Hill Cave Suites hamam ticked, no spa tick; seasonal pool and restaurant
Göreme, Aydınlı-Orta Heybe Hotel & Spa 33 rooms; indoor pool and Turkish bath spa centre named in highlights; breakfast is a paid extra
Uçhisar Kale Konak Cappadocia 17 rooms; spa and hamam; terrace restaurant; pet-friendly
Uçhisar, Tekelli The Kingdom of Cappadocia - Luxury Hotel pool, spa and hamam listed as three separate facilities
Uçhisar, Yukarı Uçhisar Palace In Cappadocia hamam, no spa tick; family rooms; wake-up service
Uçhisar, Tekelli Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel on-site Turkish bath and hot tub in highlights; concierge; 24-hour reception

The seven that tick a spa without a hamam are Aza Cave Hotel (+12 Adults Only), Carus Cappadocia, Mithra Cave Cappadocia, The Niche Cave Hotel and Zemi Hotel Cappadocia in Göreme, Kilim Pansiyon in Uçhisar and Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa. No hotel in Ürgüp, Çavuşin or Ortahisar mentions a hamam. For the town profiles see the Göreme guide and the Uçhisar guide.

Winter, and mornings without balloons

A hamam suits the cold half of the year. In Nevşehir the January average is a maximum of 4.0 °C and a minimum of −3.6 °C, with about 3 hours of sun a day and about 12 rainy days (MGM, 1959–2025). Balloons flew on only 51 of 149 winter days in the record, 34%, so a free morning is likely and a warm bath is a sound way to spend it; see when balloons fly and when to visit. In summer the hamam is a hotel-evening choice, after a day of walking.

Where to stay

Choose by what the record says, not by the tick alone. Artemis Cave Suites & Spa (Adults Only) is the one that says “underground” in its record, and Kelebek Cave Hotel is the one with the sauna and the most rooms. In Uçhisar, Kale Konak Cappadocia pairs a hamam with a terrace restaurant. Juno Cappadocia, pictured at the top, lists balloon and valley views and a wake-up service in Uçhisar’s Tekelli neighbourhood; its record mentions no hamam or spa. Every record is on the hotel list. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.

Questions answered in this article

How many hotels in the catalogue have a hamam?

Nine of the 80 records mention one: 7 tick Turkish bath (hamam), 4 of them in Göreme and 3 in Uçhisar, and 2 more, Heybe Hotel & Spa and Mimi Cappadocia Luxury Cave Hotel, name a Turkish bath in their highlights. None is in Ürgüp, Çavuşin, Ortahisar or Mustafapaşa.

Is a hamam the same as a spa?

No. 12 records tick a spa and 7 a hamam, and only 5 tick both. A hamam is a heated bathing room with scrub and foam; a spa may mean massage, a sauna or a pool. Ask what the hotel actually offers.

What do I wear in a hamam?

Usually a thin cotton wrap (peştamal), often with swimwear underneath. House rules differ, so ask. Hotel hamams are often booked privately, which changes what is expected.

Who should avoid a hamam?

The heat is a reason for caution in pregnancy, with heart or blood-pressure conditions, with a fever, after alcohol or a heavy meal, and for anyone prone to fainting. Ask your doctor, drink water and leave the hot room if you feel dizzy.

Can non-guests use a hotel hamam?

The records do not say, and they give no hours or treatment lists. Ask the hotel directly before you plan around it.
