February is the month when balloons flew least often: on 15 of the 56 February days in our 2025 and 2026 record (27%), against 44% in January and 52% in March. In 2025 there were no flights at all from 5 to 22 February, an 18-day gap that is the longest in the whole record. The weather is cold rather than extreme: the Nevşehir average high is 5.5 °C and the average low −2.6 °C. So February suits visitors who want hamams, workshops and quiet walks, and it suits a balloon-first trip badly. This guide gives the numbers behind that. It has no prices or opening hours.
The weather in February
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | −0.1 °C | 0.9 °C | 5.0 °C |
| Average high / low | 4.0 / −3.6 °C | 5.5 / −2.6 °C | 10.3 / 0.7 °C |
| Sunshine, hours a day | 3.1 | 4.2 | 5.3 |
| Rainy days | 12.3 | 12.1 | 13.1 |
| Precipitation | 45.4 mm | 41.1 mm | 48.1 mm |
| Record high / low | 19.8 / −21.2 °C | 19.6 / −23.6 °C | 28.0 / −18.0 °C |
MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir. February is a little brighter and drier than January, but it holds the coldest reading ever recorded, −23.6 °C, and the deepest snow cover on record, 64 cm, measured on 2 February 1992. The average low stays below zero, so some of the 12.1 rainy days can bring snow; the data does not split rain from snow, and we hold no snow-day count.
Dress for it: a warm coat, a hat, gloves and shoes with grip. With a gap of only 8.1 °C between the average high and low, the afternoon is not much warmer than the morning, so a thermos and a spare power bank (cold drains batteries) are useful on a balloon morning. Days are short, with 4.2 hours of sun on average, and if you arrive by air after dark, it is worth confirming the hotel transfer in advance; 29 hotels list one.
Balloons: the lowest share of the year
| Year | Flown | Cancelled | Share | Days with flights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| February 2025 | 7 | 21 | 25% | 1–4, 23–24, 28 |
| February 2026 | 8 | 20 | 29% | 1, 4–5, 15, 20–21, 23–24 |
February 2025 is the lowest month in the record at 25%; February 2026, December 2025 and January 2026 follow at 29% each. Almost all of February 2025’s flying fell at its edges: four days at the start (the end of a 10-day run that began on 26 January) and three at the end. In between lies the 18-day gap, 5 to 22 February 2025. Anyone who arrived on 5 February that year would have seen no balloon fly even on a stay of 18 nights. In 2026 the longest gap was 9 days, from 6 to 14 February, and the flying days were scattered: 1, 4–5, 15, 20–21 and 23–24.
Counting only windows of consecutive mornings that sit wholly inside February, in both years:
| Mornings | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows with at least one flight | 37% | 46% | 54% | 60% |
Even five mornings found a flight in only three windows out of five. These numbers rest on two Februaries, and they say nothing about a particular morning; the decision is made on the day, on wind and visibility. If you still want the flight, plan five nights or more, book it for the first morning and ask the operator what happens after a cancellation. The month-by-month table is in balloon flight days.
Is February worth it?
It depends on what you came for. February is a little brighter than January (4.2 hours of sun a day against 3.1) and the driest of the three winter months at 41.1 mm, but no month in the record has a lower share of flying days. If you want a balloon flight above everything else, the summer months in the same record flew on 74% to 84% of days; June came out at 83% in both years. If you are happy with short walks wrapped up warm, a snow chance you cannot count on and long evenings in a warm room, February is a workable month. We hold no data on how busy the towns are, so we cannot say whether it is quieter.
Plan the days without flights
In February the better question is what you will do on the mornings that stay quiet. A few options that work in cold weather, none of them dependent on balloons:
- A hamam or spa. 9 records mention a hamam and 12 tick a spa; the hamam guide lists them and covers etiquette and health cautions.
- A cooking class. The cooking class guide covers what a class involves and what to ask.
- A pottery workshop in Avanos, or a tasting at a winery in Ürgüp, both mostly indoors.
Museums and rock churches keep their own winter hours, which we do not hold, so check them. Keeping more than one plan ready for a morning or an afternoon protects a trip in a month when flight-free days are common. Icy steps and paths are the main outdoor risk, and daylight is short at 4.2 hours of sun a day. The catalogue also counts the quiet comforts: 29 hotels list a restaurant and 24 room service, and two records name an indoor pool, Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa and Heybe Hotel & Spa in Göreme.
