March is the month when winter loosens its grip in Cappadocia without letting go. In Nevşehir the average high is 10.3 °C and the average low 0.7 °C, the first month of the year with an average low above zero. It is also the month with the most rainy days, 13.1, and balloons flew on 32 of the 62 March days in our 2025 and 2026 record (52%): 61% in 2025 and 42% in 2026. This guide puts the weather and the flight record side by side and suggests how to plan a stay between showers. It has no prices or opening hours.

The weather in March

Measure February March April
Average temperature 0.9 °C 5.0 °C 10.2 °C
Average high / low 5.5 / −2.6 °C 10.3 / 0.7 °C 16.0 / 5.1 °C
Sunshine, hours a day 4.2 5.3 6.6
Rainy days 12.1 13.1 12.5
Precipitation 41.1 mm 48.1 mm 50.2 mm
Record high / low 19.6 / −23.6 °C 28.0 / −18.0 °C 31.6 / −12.5 °C

MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir. The average high gains almost five degrees on February, but nights stay close to freezing and the lowest March reading on record is −18.0 °C. The rainy-day count does not separate rain from snow, and we hold no snow-day count. Melting snow and frequent rain can leave valley paths muddy; wet tuff is slippery, so take shoes with grip and a rain layer, and keep walks short. Layers are the sensible answer: mornings near freezing, afternoons that can feel mild in the sun and cool quickly when cloud closes in, and a hat and gloves still earn their place in the bag for a balloon morning. The hiking overview covers rain and ice on valley routes.

Balloons in March 2025 and 2026

Year Flown Cancelled Share Days without flights
March 2025 19 12 61% 1, 3–4, 13, 17–21, 28–29, 31
March 2026 13 18 42% 1, 4, 7, 9, 14–16, 18–23, 26, 28–31

March 2025 had a run of 8 consecutive flying days, from 5 to 12 March, then 5 days without flights, from 17 to 21 March. March 2026 split in two: 9 flying days in the first half of the month and only 4 in the second, with a gap of 6 days from 18 to 23 March and another from 28 to 31. The two years’ shares are 19 points apart, which is how far a single March can differ from another.

One date stands out for anyone planning around the spring festival: Nevruz, marked on 21 March. In our record balloons did not fly on 21 March in either year, since it fell inside the cancellation stretches of both 2025 and 2026. Two observations are not a pattern, and the decision is made on the morning, on wind and visibility, so do not read it as a rule.

Counting only windows of consecutive mornings that sit wholly inside March, in both years:

Mornings 2 3 4 5
Windows with at least one flight 73% 83% 89% 94%

Three March mornings gave a flight in five windows out of six; two mornings in about three out of four. That is better than winter, but it rests on two Marches, and it cannot say whether a particular morning will fly. Plan three or four nights, book the flight for your first morning and leave spare mornings behind it; the balloon flight days article gives the month-by-month table.

March between February and April

Seen as a step, March sits in the middle. The share of flying days climbs from 27% in February to 52% in March and 62% in April; the average high rises from 5.5 to 10.3 and then 16.0 °C; sunshine grows from 4.2 to 5.3 and 6.6 hours a day. Rain does not follow the same ramp: the 13.1 rainy days of March are the highest count of the year, and the 12.1 of February and 12.5 of April are close behind. The difference between day and night is 9.6 °C, so mornings stay cold even when afternoons feel mild. A March trip is a trade: more flying days and more light than February, more rain and cold nights than April or May.

Planning around the weather

March suits visitors who can adapt. The long outdoor days of summer are not here yet: average sunshine is 5.3 hours, against 8.4 in May, and rain falls on 13.1 days. So plan the day in two halves. Put the outdoor stop, such as a short walk or a rock church, in the dry spell, and keep a second indoor option (a hamam, a workshop, a long lunch) for when it closes in. In the catalogue, 29 hotels list a restaurant and 24 room service, which helps when an afternoon turns wet.

Walkable bases save wet-weather detours. Travellers Cave Hotel gives five minutes on foot to Göreme’s town centre, Taşkonak Cave House about five minutes, Terra Cave Hotel about 300 m, and Kale Konak Cappadocia a few minutes’ walk to the centre of Uçhisar. We hold no occupancy figures, so we cannot say how busy March weekends are; the dates of religious holidays shift from year to year, so check them against your trip before you book.

Travellers Cave Hotel (hilltop terraces, parking) and Terra Cave Hotel (a 19th-century carved cave, wake-up service) are the Göreme examples above; Kale Konak Cappadocia (17 rooms, a spa, a hamam and room service) is the Uçhisar one.
