April is the first month in Cappadocia when the weather and the balloons work together: the average high reaches 16.0 °C, the average low 5.1 °C, and balloons flew on 37 of the 60 April days in our 2025 and 2026 record (62%). It is still a showery month, with 12.5 rainy days and 50.2 mm of precipitation, and the fruit trees in the valley gardens usually blossom around now. This guide sets the weather and the flight record side by side, and it points to the 20 hotels in the catalogue that list a valley view. It has no prices or opening hours.
The weather in April
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 5.0 °C | 10.2 °C | 14.5 °C |
| Average high / low | 10.3 / 0.7 °C | 16.0 / 5.1 °C | 20.6 / 8.9 °C |
| Gap between day and night | 9.6 °C | 10.9 °C | 11.7 °C |
| Sunshine, hours a day | 5.3 | 6.6 | 8.4 |
| Rainy days | 13.1 | 12.5 | 12.9 |
| Precipitation | 48.1 mm | 50.2 mm | 57.9 mm |
| Record high / low | 28.0 / −18.0 °C | 31.6 / −12.5 °C | 32.6 / −2.3 °C |
MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir. A daytime high of 16 °C suits walking; the dawn average of 5.1 °C is the number to dress for on a balloon morning. Rain falls on 12.5 days, almost as many as in March, and the 50.2 mm total is the second highest of the year. Take a rain layer and shoes with grip, because wet tuff is slippery on valley paths.
Balloons in April 2025 and 2026
| Year | Flown | Cancelled | Share | Days without flights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April 2025 | 19 | 11 | 63% | 1–3, 6, 10–11, 13–15, 25–26 |
| April 2026 | 18 | 12 | 60% | 2–4, 8, 10–11, 18–20, 22–24 |
The two Aprils are close, unlike January or March, and in both the longest gap was 3 days. April 2025 had a run of 9 flying days from 16 to 24 April, but it began slowly: 6 flying days in the first half of the month against 13 in the second. In 2026 balloons flew 6 days in a row twice, from 12 to 17 and from 25 to 30 April.
Counting only windows of consecutive mornings that sit wholly inside April, in both years:
| Mornings | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows with at least one flight | 78% | 91% | 100% | 100% |
April is the first month of the calendar year in which every window of four mornings contained a flight. That is a statement about two Aprils only, and it says nothing about a particular morning, since the decision is made on the day, on wind and visibility. For a balloon flight, 3 to 4 nights is a reasonable plan; book the flight for your first morning so that a cancellation leaves spare ones. The month-by-month table is in balloon flight days.
Blossom and the valleys
Fruit trees in the valley gardens, among them apricot, usually blossom in spring, and April is when many people come for it. We hold no blossom dates, and the timing shifts with each year’s weather, so treat it as a likelihood, not a calendar entry; ask your hotel closer to your dates. April is also a good month for the valleys in general: highs of 16 °C and 6.6 hours of sun make a walk pleasant, while the nights are still cool. Love Valley is the easiest walk, and Rose Valley and Red Valley the classic afternoon one, planned for a dry spell and with a rain layer in the bag.
In the catalogue, 20 records list a valley view: 13 in Göreme, 3 in Uçhisar, 2 in Ürgüp and 2 in Çavuşin. Seven list a garden (two in Göreme, two in Uçhisar, one each in Ürgüp, Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa) and 10 a terrace. A ticked “valley view” tells you the view exists, not which rooms have it, so ask for a room with it.
A day in April
A workable April day starts with the coldest hour. If you fly, the pick-up comes before sunrise, when the average low is 5.1 °C, so a warm jacket, a hat and gloves are still useful, with layers you can shed by the afternoon. After breakfast, use the dry spells: rain falls on 12.5 of the month’s 30 days, roughly two days in five, so keep the walk short and have a church, a workshop or a long lunch in mind as a refuge. Late afternoon is the second good light of the day, and the evenings stay cool.
April or May?
The two months are neighbours, and the numbers pull in different directions. May is warmer (an average high of 20.6 °C against 16.0), brighter (8.4 hours of sun a day against 6.6) and has a higher share of flying days over the two years (65% against 62%). It is also the wettest month of the year at 57.9 mm. April is cooler, with dawns around 5.1 °C, and it is the month in which blossom is most likely. If cool walking and the blossom chance matter more to you than warmth, April is the better fit; if you want longer, brighter days and can accept the rain, look at May. Either way, the flying share differs more between years than between the two months: May was 74% in 2025 and 55% in 2026.
Where to stay in April
For the valleys on foot, Seki Cave Hotel in Çavuşin lists a valley view and says Güllüdere and Kızıl Valley are within walking distance. Design Cave Hotel in Göreme lists a valley view and names Love Valley, Pigeon Valley and the Open Air Museum as walkable. Göreme Inn sits at the mouth of Pigeon Valley and lists a valley view. Roma Cave Suite Hotel, pictured above, has 13 rooms in Göreme with balloon views, parking, a wake-up service and a 13:00 check-in, which suits an April arrival around midday.
