August is the hottest month of the Cappadocian year by average daily maximum: 28.7 °C, with 11.3 hours of sun a day and only 1.7 rainy days. In August 2025 balloons flew on 26 of 31 days (84%), the highest monthly share in our whole record. One caution comes first: the flight calendar ends on 2 August 2026, so for this month we have a single full year, and 2 days of the next. This guide sets the weather, the flight record and the catalogue’s family-room and cooling counts side by side. It has no prices or opening hours.

The weather in August

Measure July August September
Average temperature 21.4 °C 21.3 °C 17.3 °C
Average high / low 28.5 / 13.7 °C 28.7 / 13.6 °C 24.5 / 10.5 °C
Gap between day and night 14.8 °C 15.1 °C 14.0 °C
Sunshine, hours a day 11.9 11.3 9.4
Rainy days 2.3 1.7 3.4
Precipitation 9.4 mm 8.4 mm 14.3 mm
Record high / low 39.5 / 3.8 °C 38.2 / 3.1 °C 37.4 / −1.2 °C

MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir. August has the highest average daily maximum and the widest gap between day and night, 15.1 °C, so a hot afternoon is followed by a cool morning and evening; a thin layer helps at both ends of the day. It is also the driest month, with 8.4 mm. In the afternoon, a hat, sunscreen and water are the basics.

Balloons in August 2025, and the two days of 2026

Year Flown Cancelled Share Days without flights
August 2025 26 5 84% 2, 8–9, 16, 25
August 2026 (1–2 only) 2 0 n/a none recorded

The record for August 2026 stops on the 2nd: both days flew, but two days prove nothing and we do not give a share. August 2025 is the month to read. The longest gap was 2 days, 8 to 9 August; the longest run of flying days was 8, from 17 to 24 August; and a second run of 8 days began on 26 August and carried into September. The second half of the month flew on 14 of 16 days. Across summer 2025 (June to August), balloons flew on 74 of 92 days, 80%, and August had the highest share of the three, ahead of June (83%) and July (74%).

Counting only windows of consecutive mornings that sit wholly inside August 2025:

Mornings 2 3 4 5
Windows with at least one flight 97% 100% 100% 100%

One August is not a pattern, and nothing here says whether a particular morning will fly: the decision is made on the day, on wind and visibility. Two nights covered nearly every window, and the first morning is still the one to book. The month-by-month table is in balloon flight days.

Reading one August

A single year is thin evidence. In the months where we have two years, the gap between them reached 29 points (January was 58% in 2025 and 29% in 2026) and 19 points in May and March. August 2025’s 84% is therefore a good sign, not a forecast; a different August could land well below it. What the data does support is the season’s shape: the summer months were the steadiest in the record, with no gap longer than 3 days from June to August.

How busy is August?

We cannot answer that with data: the catalogue holds no occupancy figures and no prices. What we can say is that August falls inside the Turkish school summer holiday, and that weather-wise it is almost a copy of July, so the choice between them rests on your dates. If your dates are fixed, book early and ask each hotel what its cancellation terms are. Before you pay, check the check-in time too: it is 14:00 at 75 of the 80 hotels, and a hot arrival at midday is easier if you can leave bags.

Families, cooling and pools

For families in the school holiday, 33 hotels list family rooms: 17 in Göreme, 8 in Uçhisar, 3 in Ürgüp, 3 in Çavuşin and 1 each in Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa. 22 of the 33 also tick air conditioning (14 in Göreme, 3 in Uçhisar, 2 in Ürgüp, 2 in Çavuşin and 1 in Ortahisar). Two tick both air conditioning and a swimming pool, Kelebek Cave Hotel and Local Cave House, and Sultan Cave Suites, which lists family rooms, names a seasonal outdoor pool without ticking one. The steps, railings and terraces that matter with young children are covered in Cappadocia with kids. On valley walks, start early and go late: the midday sun is the hardest of the year, and the hiking overview has the water and heat notes.

Evenings after a hot afternoon

The 15.1 °C gap means the evening is cooler than the afternoon by a clear margin: the average low of 13.6 °C is the figure to dress for after sunset and before sunrise. That makes a terrace the natural place to spend an August evening, and 10 records tick a terrace while 38 tick a balloon view. A balloon view is a morning view, though, so if the evening matters to you, ask which way the terrace faces and whether it is shared with other guests.

Where to stay in August

Design Cave Hotel in Göreme, pictured above, is a cave house inside Göreme National Park with sunrise terraces over the balloon flights, balloon and valley views, air conditioning, parking and family rooms; it lists the Open Air Museum, Love Valley and Pigeon Valley as walkable, and check-out is at 11:00. Kelebek Cave Hotel (36 rooms, a spa, a hamam and a seasonal outdoor pool) and Local Cave House (12 rooms and a rock-carved pool, check-in from 15:00) are the two with family rooms, air conditioning and a pool.
