September is the month the Cappadocian year starts to cool: the average high is 24.5 °C, 4.2 °C lower than in August, with 9.4 hours of sun a day and 3.4 rainy days. Balloons flew on 20 of 30 days in September 2025 (67%). One caution comes first: the flight record ends on 2 August 2026, so we hold a single September and cannot compare it with a second one, as we can for earlier months. This guide sets the weather, that one September and the catalogue’s wine mentions side by side. It has no prices, opening hours or harvest dates.

The weather in September

Measure August September October
Average temperature 21.3 °C 17.3 °C 12.1 °C
Average high / low 28.7 / 13.6 °C 24.5 / 10.5 °C 18.3 / 6.8 °C
Gap between day and night 15.1 °C 14.0 °C 11.5 °C
Sunshine, hours a day 11.3 9.4 6.5
Rainy days 1.7 3.4 7.0
Precipitation 8.4 mm 14.3 mm 28.0 mm
Record high / low 38.2 / 3.1 °C 37.4 / −1.2 °C 32.0 / −7.6 °C

MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir, so Göreme or Ürgüp can differ locally. From August, September loses 4.2 °C on the average high, 3.1 °C on the average low and 1.9 hours of sun. Rain is still scarce: 14.3 mm against 8.4 mm in August. The record low of −1.2 °C is the first below zero since May’s −2.3 °C, a reminder that a September night can be cold, and the 14.0 °C gap between day and night means a warm afternoon is followed by a cool evening.

Balloons in September 2025

Year Flown Cancelled Share Days without flights
September 2025 20 10 67% 3–4, 8, 11, 18–21, 29–30
September 2026 no record no record n/a the record ends on 2 August 2026

The month opened with flights on 1 and 2 September, the end of an 8-day run that began on 26 August. The longest run inside September was 7 days, 22 to 28 September, and the longest gap was 4 days, 18 to 21 September. The first half of the month flew on 11 of 15 days and the second half on 9 of 15, and the month closed with two days without flights, 29 and 30 September.

September also sits on a slope. In 2025 the monthly share fell every month from August to December:

2025 August September October November December
Days with flights 26 of 31 20 of 30 18 of 31 16 of 30 9 of 31
Share 84% 67% 58% 53% 29%

Counting only windows of consecutive mornings that sit wholly inside September 2025:

Mornings 2 3 4 5
Windows with at least one flight 83% 93% 96% 100%

Of 29 two-morning windows, 5 had no flight; of 28 three-morning windows, 2 had none. Three or four nights is a reasonable plan, and the first morning is the one to book. The decision is made on the day, on wind and visibility. The month-by-month table is in balloon flight days.

What one September can tell you

A single year is thin evidence. In the months where we have two years, the gap between them reached 29 points (January was 58% in 2025 and 29% in 2026) and 19 points in March and May. A different September could therefore land well above or below 67%. What the 2025 record does support is the shape of autumn: the share slid month by month from August to December. Treat 67% as a good sign, not a forecast.

Wine country in September

Ürgüp is the town most associated with winemaking in Cappadocia; the grapes, the tasting routine and the questions to ask a winery are in wine tasting in Ürgüp. Whether a grape harvest overlaps with your visit is a question for the winery: we hold no harvest dates and do not promise one.

What the catalogue does record is that three of the 80 hotels mention wine. 4 Oda Cave House in Ürgüp’s Temenni area ticks a winery on site and also lists a bar, a restaurant, a terrace and a garden. Ürgüp Evi lists a winery next door, bicycle rental, a 24-hour reception and 12 rooms. Amber Cave Suites in Göreme’s Gaferli area lists local wine tasting on its terrace. Keep the tasting for the end of the day, never before a balloon flight or a drive, and ask the hotel about a driver or a transfer.

Dressing for 24.5 °C days and 10.5 °C nights

The average high is comfortable for walking, and 9.4 hours of sun still calls for a hat, sunscreen and water. The average low of 10.5 °C and the record low of −1.2 °C mean a jacket for the balloon pick-up and for the evening, and a 14.0 °C gap rewards layers over one thick coat. With 3.4 rainy days on average, a light waterproof is cheap insurance.

September or October?

October loses a further 6.2 °C on the average high (24.5 to 18.3 °C) and 2.9 hours of sun (9.4 to 6.5), and has about twice as many rainy days (3.4 to 7.0) and twice the precipitation (14.3 to 28.0 mm). The balloon record points the same way, 67% in September 2025 and 58% in October 2025, but each is a single year, so do not read a firm difference into nine points. If your dates are flexible, September is the warmer and drier of the two; for an overview of the whole year, see when to visit Cappadocia across the year.

We hold no harvest dates, so we cannot confirm it. If a winery visit is part of your plan, ask the winery or your hotel what is happening on your dates.

Which hotels mention wine?

Three of the 80 catalogue hotels do: 4 Oda Cave House (a winery on site) and Ürgüp Evi (a winery next door), both in Ürgüp, and Amber Cave Suites in Göreme, which lists local wine tasting on its terrace.

How many nights should I plan in September to catch a balloon flight?

In the 2025 record, 2 September mornings gave at least one flight in 83% of windows, 3 mornings in 93% and 5 mornings in all of them. One year is thin evidence, so three or four nights is a reasonable plan.
