Cappadocia in October: 18.3 °C days, cool nights and 58% flights

October is the month the Cappadocian days turn cool and the nights turn cold: the average high is 18.3 °C, the average low 6.8 °C, and the lowest October reading on record is −7.6 °C. Balloons flew on 18 of 31 days in October 2025 (58%). One caution comes first: the flight record ends on 2 August 2026, so we hold a single October and cannot compare it with a second one. This guide sets the weather, that one October and the catalogue’s balloon-view and heating records side by side. It has no prices, opening hours or foliage dates.

MGM averages for 1959–2025, Nevşehir, so Göreme or Uçhisar can differ locally. From September, October loses 6.2 °C on the average high, 3.7 °C on the average low and 2.9 hours of sun, and the rainy days double from 3.4 to 7.0. The precipitation doubles too, to 28.0 mm. The record low of −7.6 °C is the first below −5 °C of the second half of the year, so an October night can be properly cold.

The longest run of flying days was 7, from 13 to 19 October, and the longest gap was 4 days, from 26 to 29 October; the month then closed with flights on 30 and 31 October. The first 15 days flew on 9 days and the last 16 on 9 days, so the month was even from start to finish. Across autumn 2025 (September to November) balloons flew on 54 of 91 days, 59%, and October was within a point of that average.

A single October

October 2025’s 58% is the same share as January 2025’s, the month that fell to 29% a year later. That is how far a single year can mislead: where we have two years of the same month, the gap reached 29 points. Treat 58% as one observation, not a forecast. What the record does show for 2025 is that October fell between September’s 67% and November’s 53%, and that it had no gap longer than 4 days.

Autumn colours: what we can and cannot say

We hold no foliage data, no sunrise or sunset times and no leaf-fall dates, so we cannot say when the colours peak, how strong they are or whether a given week is better than another. What the climate file gives is the weather they happen in: 6.5 hours of sun a day, down from 9.4 in September, 7.0 rainy days and 28.0 mm of rain. For a visitor that means shorter days with less sun and a real chance of a wet one; a light waterproof belongs in the bag. If colour is the reason you are coming, ask your hotel what the valleys near it look like in the week of your visit rather than rely on a month.

Cool nights, heating and balloon views

The average low of 6.8 °C is the figure for the balloon pick-up and for the evening; the 11.5 °C gap means you will shed layers by midday. Ten of the 80 records state heating, as heated floors, fireplaces or heated rooms: 3 in Göreme, 2 each in Ürgüp and Çavuşin, and 1 each in Uçhisar, Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa. The other 70 do not say, which does not mean unheated: ask whether the room is heated, how, and whether you can adjust it.

Balloon views matter more in a cold month, because a view from the room or terrace lets you watch the flights from where you slept. 38 records tick a balloon view: 27 in Göreme, 8 in Uçhisar and 3 in Çavuşin. October or November?

November loses a further 6.5 °C on the average high (18.3 to 11.8 °C), 4.3 °C on the average low (6.8 to 2.5 °C) and 1.9 hours of sun (6.5 to 4.6), and adds 1.5 rainy days and 6.3 mm of rain. The balloon record leans the same way, 58% in October 2025 and 53% in November 2025, but each is a single year, so do not read a firm difference into five points.
