January is Cappadocia’s coldest month: in Nevşehir the average temperature is −0.1 °C, the average high 4.0 °C, the average low −3.6 °C, and there are only 3.1 hours of sun a day. Balloons flew on 27 of the 62 January days in our 2025 and 2026 record (44%), but the two years differ sharply: 58% in 2025 and 29% in 2026. Hotels matter more in January than in any other month, and only 10 of the 80 catalogue records state a heating feature. This guide sets the weather, the flight record and the catalogue side by side. It gives no prices or opening hours.
The weather in January
| Measure | January | Compared with the year |
|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | −0.1 °C | lowest of the 12 months |
| Average high / low | 4.0 / −3.6 °C | both the lowest; July is 28.5 / 13.7 |
| Gap between day and night | 7.6 °C | July is 14.8 °C |
| Sunshine | 3.1 hours a day | joint lowest with December; July is 11.9 |
| Rainy days | 12.3 | February 12.1, March 13.1 |
| Precipitation | 45.4 mm | |
| Record high / low | 19.8 / −21.2 °C |
All values are MGM averages for 1959–2025 at the Nevşehir station, so Göreme or Uçhisar can differ locally. The rainy-day count does not separate rain from snow. The only snow figure we hold is the deepest cover on record, 64 cm on 2 February 1992; we have no snow-day count, so we cannot say how likely a white morning is.
With an average high of 4 °C, the cold is steady rather than sharp, and the small gap between day and night means the afternoon brings little relief. Dress in layers, take shoes with grip, and expect ice on shaded steps and paths. The days are short, so plan outdoor stops before the late afternoon.
Balloons in January 2025 and 2026
| Year | Flown | Cancelled | Share | Days without flights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 18 | 13 | 58% | 4–6, 10, 12–13, 16–19, 22–23, 25 |
| January 2026 | 9 | 22 | 29% | 1, 3–4, 8–13, 15–17, 19, 22–24, 26–31 |
Together that is 27 of 62 days (44%). The longest gap in January 2025 was 4 days (16–19 January); in 2026 there were two gaps of 6 days (8–13 and 26–31 January). The year opened differently, too: balloons flew every day from 1 to 3 January 2025, and not on 1 January 2026. The 2025 month ended well, with flights on 26 to 31 January that ran on into 4 February, the longest run of flying days in the winter record.
What this means for a short stay is easiest to see with windows of consecutive mornings. Counting only windows that sit wholly inside January, in both years:
| Mornings | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows with at least one flight | 63% | 78% | 88% | 93% |
So three January mornings gave a flight in roughly four windows out of five, and five mornings in over nine out of ten. That rests on two Januaries only, and nothing in it says whether a particular morning will fly. If it does, remember that the pick-up comes before sunrise, in the coldest hour of the coldest month: the average low of −3.6 °C is a mean over all nights, and the lowest January reading on record is −21.2 °C. Take a hat, gloves and a layer you can add at the launch field, and ask the operator about the pick-up time. Book the flight for your first morning, so that a cancellation still leaves you spare ones; the balloon flight days article has the same method for every month.
Heat in a stone house: what the catalogue says
A thick mass of rock slows the passage of the outside temperature into a carved room, but with a −3.6 °C average low, how the room is heated matters more than the rock. The catalogue records it rarely. Searching all 80 records, 10 state some heating feature:
- Heated floors (5): The Calypso Cave in Ürgüp, Vita Cave Suites in Ortahisar, Nujel’m Cappadocia in Mustafapaşa, Zara Cave Hotel +10 in Göreme and Kayata Cave Suites in Ürgüp (the last in its highlights).
- Fireplaces (4): Seki Cave Hotel and Azure Cave Suites in Çavuşin, Divan Cave House in Göreme and Leda Stone House in Uçhisar.
- Heated rooms (1): the text of Local Cave House in Göreme says its rooms are heated and air-conditioned.
For the other 70 records the heating is simply not stated. Ask what heats the room, whether it is on when you arrive, and whether the bathroom is warm. Warmth outside the room is easier to count: 9 records mention a hamam and 12 tick a spa, and two records name an indoor pool, Yılkı Cave Suites in Mustafapaşa and Heybe Hotel & Spa in Göreme. The hamam guide lists them and covers the health cautions for going out into the cold afterwards.
Short days, indoor days
With 3.1 hours of sun a day and 12.3 rainy days, January is a month of indoor options: pottery workshops, wineries, restaurants and hamams, plus museums, though we hold no January opening hours, so check them before you plan a day around one. In the catalogue, 29 hotels list a restaurant and 24 list room service, which matters when a cold evening keeps you in. A cancelled morning is not a lost day if you keep one indoor plan in reserve; in the two Januaries flights were cancelled on 35 of the 62 days.
Where to stay in January
Start from the records that say something about heat. The Calypso Cave (seven rooms) lists heated floors, a 24-hour reception and an airport transfer; Kayata Cave Suites (nine rooms) pairs heated floors with indoor private hot tubs. Seki Cave Hotel (16 rooms) puts a fireplace in each room and lists parking and an airport transfer. Leda Stone House (eight rooms) has fireplace rooms, jacuzzis and a restaurant, useful on a short, cold day. For the full list see the hotel list.
