Summer is the easiest season for balloons and the hardest for the middle of the day. In Nevşehir the average high is 24.9 °C in June, 28.5 °C in July and 28.7 °C in August, the record is 39.5 °C, and the sun shines for 10.6 to 11.9 hours a day. Balloons flew on 81% of summer days in our record. The way to handle the heat is to work with the shape of the day: sightseeing at the edges, shade or water at midday. This guide sets out the June–August numbers, the balloon record, what the 80 hotels in our catalogue offer against the heat (48 list air conditioning, 13 a pool) and what we can and cannot say about crowds. It gives no prices or opening hours.

June to August in numbers

The figures are 1959–2025 averages from the Nevşehir station (MGM). Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp can differ a little.

Month Average high Average low Day–night gap Sunshine (h/day) Rainy days Rain (mm) Highest recorded
June 24.9 °C 11.7 °C 13.2 °C 10.6 8.1 37.5 35.0 °C
July 28.5 °C 13.7 °C 14.8 °C 11.9 2.3 9.4 39.5 °C
August 28.7 °C 13.6 °C 15.1 °C 11.3 1.7 8.4 38.2 °C

July and August are almost dry. June is the wetter month of the three, with 8.1 rainy days. The averages hide the extremes: the highest values on record are 9.5 to 11 °C above the average highs. For the other seasons see when to visit Cappadocia.

The shape of a summer day

The gap between the average high and low is 13 to 15 °C. A morning that starts at about 12–14 °C turns into a 28 °C afternoon, so a thin layer is useful before the sun is up and unnecessary two hours later. The same gap makes early starts rewarding: the cooler hours are the ones in which a valley walk is comfortable.

A workable pattern is:

  • Early: the balloon morning, or a valley walk, or a museum visit before the heat builds.
  • Midday: a long lunch, a pool, a hamam or a rest in a carved room.
  • Late afternoon and evening: viewpoints, a village walk, dinner outdoors.

Take water, a hat and sunscreen on any walk; shade is thin in the valleys. The hiking overview says which routes suit whom, and the heat is a reason to choose the shorter ones in July and August. Check the weather page the evening before.

Balloons in summer

Summer has the best record of the year for flights. Our calendar covers June and July in both 2025 and 2026 and August in 2025; the two August 2026 days at the end of the record (both flown) are left out.

Month 2025 2026 Both years
June 25 of 30 (83%) 25 of 30 (83%) 50 of 60 (83%)
July 23 of 31 (74%) 25 of 31 (81%) 48 of 62 (77%)
August 26 of 31 (84%) not counted 26 of 31 (84%)
Summer 74 of 92 (80%) 50 of 61 (82%) 124 of 153 (81%)

The longest run of cancelled mornings was 3 days, from 24 to 26 July 2025. Looked at as windows, 2 mornings held at least one flight on 95% of starting days, and 3 mornings on 99%. So in summer two nights are a reasonable minimum if a flight matters, against four or five in winter. The day-by-day tables are in when balloons fly. The calendar says nothing about which mornings are windy or how full a given basket is.

Crowds: what we know and what we do not

Our data holds no visitor numbers, so we cannot measure crowds, and we will not invent a figure. What we can say is limited. Summer has the highest flight rate and the longest days, which is a reason to expect more visitors than in winter. Treat that as a planning assumption.

The practical response needs no numbers. Do the popular things early or late, book the balloon and the hotel ahead for the dates you care about, and ask your hotel when the busiest hours are at the sights you want. The same early start that avoids the heat also avoids the middle-of-the-morning crowd at the most visited places.

Staying cool in a cave hotel

Thick rock slows the passage of outside heat into a carved room, so carved rooms are usually cooler than the outdoors on a hot afternoon. That is a general property of the rock, not something the catalogue measures. What the catalogue does record is air conditioning:

Town Hotels With air conditioning
Göreme 43 35
Uçhisar 19 7
Ürgüp 9 3
Çavuşin 3 2
Ortahisar 2 1
Mustafapaşa 4 0
Total 80 48

Of the 54 cave-category hotels, 35 tick it. The tick is not proof of absence where it is missing, but if a cool night matters to you, ask, especially in Mustafapaşa and Ürgüp, where few records tick it. Ventilation and damp are not recorded either; see the hotel list to compare records.

Hotels with a pool

13 hotels tick a swimming pool: 11 in Göreme and 2 in Uçhisar, none in Ürgüp, Çavuşin, Ortahisar or Mustafapaşa. Six of the 13 say the pool is seasonal: Aza Cave Hotel (+12 Adults Only), Göreme Cave Lodge, Göreme Cave Suites, Kelebek Cave Hotel, Secret Hill Cave Suites and Soho Cappadocia. The records give no opening dates, so ask. Carus Cappadocia has a cave pool, Local Cave House a pool cut into the rock and Heybe Hotel & Spa an indoor one. The full list with what each record says is in hotels with a pool.

Where to stay in summer

Göreme Cave Lodge, pictured above, lists a seasonal outdoor pool, a garden, a terrace, air conditioning and a 24-hour front desk, so check when the pool is open. Local Cave House has 12 heated, air-conditioned rooms and a rock-carved pool. Kelebek Cave Hotel combines a seasonal pool with a spa and a hamam, and in Uçhisar Karlık Evi Cappadocia lists a pool, air conditioning and rooms facing the sunrise launches.
