Soğanlı Valley: rock churches and dolls on the southern edge
Soğanlı Valley on Cappadocia’s southern edge: rock churches such as Karabaş and Yılanlı, handmade dolls, how to combine it with Mustafapaşa, and 4 nearby hotels.

Soğanlı is a pair of valleys on the south-eastern edge of Cappadocia, in Kayseri province, known for rock-cut churches with painted interiors and for handmade cloth dolls sold in the village. It is a day trip by road, usually combined with Keşlik Monastery and Mustafapaşa. None of the 80 hotels in our catalogue mentions Soğanlı; the catalogue’s town on that side of the region is Mustafapaşa, with 4 hotels. This guide describes the valley, the churches and the dolls, and how to plan around them. It gives no distances, times, fees or opening hours.
Where Soğanlı is
The valleys lie beyond Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa, towards the south-eastern edge of the region, and across the provincial line from Nevşehir into Kayseri province. That is why the trip needs a vehicle and most of a day, and why it suits a day with a driver. The tuff here has been carved for the same purposes as elsewhere in Cappadocia: churches, houses, storerooms and dovecotes cut into the rock walls and fairy chimneys, on both sides of the valleys. The settlement is a village and the visit is mostly a walk.
Because the catalogue follows the hotels of gocappadocia.com, the absence of any Soğanlı record means only that there are no hotels listed there, not that nothing is worth seeing. For provincial context, the Kayseri guide covers the neighbouring province.
The rock churches
The churches are the reason to go. They are small and many, cut into the sides of the valleys and reached by paths and sometimes steps. Two are usually named: Karabaş, the “Black Head” church, and Yılanlı, the “Snake” church, both with frescoes of the Byzantine period. Other churches in the valleys have names of their own and each has its own state of repair, so plan on seeing a handful rather than all.
Practical points:
- Paths and steps. The ground is uneven and some entrances are steep or have worn steps. Wear shoes with grip.
- Light. Interiors can be dark; a phone torch helps, and photography may be restricted inside painted churches. Follow the posted rules; flash harms the pigments.
- Access. Which churches are open, and when, changes. Check the official source and ask the driver or your hotel.
- Pace. The valleys reward time, not speed; if you only have a short window, choose two churches and walk between them.
The Soğanlı dolls
The village is known for its handmade cloth dolls, made locally and sold in the village itself. A doll is a small, light souvenir, but it is also craft, so it is worth asking who made it and how. This guide gives no prices; ask before you pick one up.
Combining it with Keşlik and Mustafapaşa
A Soğanlı day is usually built from three stops on one road: Mustafapaşa, Keşlik Monastery near it, and then the valleys. Mustafapaşa, the former Sinasos, has its own village guide, and for the other two Ürgüp-side towns see the Ürgüp, Mustafapaşa and Ortahisar guide. The southern line is the afternoon of day 3 in the 3-day itinerary; to add Soğanlı, give it the whole day instead of the afternoon.
For a sense of scale, the Yılkı Cave Suites record puts Zelve Open Air Museum about 17 km and Uçhisar Castle about 20 km from the hotel, and says sightseeing from there means travelling by road. No record gives a distance to Soğanlı.
A sample day
Leave early and start with a slow walk through Mustafapaşa before the heat builds, then Keşlik Monastery, then the valleys in the afternoon, with lunch wherever your driver or hotel recommends; ask in advance rather than assuming something will be open. Carry water, wear closed shoes with grip, and keep small change for purchases. Plan to be back on the road while there is still daylight: the paths are not places to walk in the dusk. In winter the day is shorter and the mornings are cold (the average January minimum in Nevşehir is −3.6 °C), so start later and choose fewer stops.
When to go
The valleys are exposed and the day is a long one outdoors, so the shoulder months work best. These are Nevşehir station figures (MGM, 1959–2025); Soğanlı is south-east of the station, so treat them as a guide.
| Month | Average max | Average min | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 20.6 °C | 8.9 °C | 13 |
| June | 24.9 °C | 11.7 °C | 8 |
| July | 28.5 °C | 13.7 °C | 2 |
| September | 24.5 °C | 10.5 °C | 3 |
| October | 18.3 °C | 6.8 °C | 7 |
