A balloon ride in Cappadocia is a pre-dawn pick-up, a launch field where the balloons are filled as the sky lightens, a flight that is usually described as about an hour, and a landing, often with a certificate or a toast afterwards. Whether it happens at all is decided that morning: in 2025 balloons flew on 223 of 365 days (61%). This guide walks through the morning step by step, says who should not fly and lists what to ask your operator. It names no operators and gives no prices; the operator sets the pick-up time, the group size, the length of the flight and the cancellation terms.

Before: booking and the night before

Flights must be booked in advance with an operator. Before you pay, ask:

  • Pick-up. Is hotel pick-up included, and at what time? It is well before sunrise, and sunrise shifts with the season, so the time does too.
  • The decision. How and when will you be told whether the flight goes ahead? Keep your phone on.
  • Cancellation. What happens if the flight is cancelled: another day or a refund?
  • Group size and basket. How many passengers share a basket?
  • Limits. What age, height and health limits apply?

Plan the hotel around the morning. Check-in is from 14:00 at 75 of the 80 catalogue hotels, so arrive the day before. 26 records list a wake-up service, which suits a start in the dark. Two Göreme records say the hotel can arrange the flight itself: Zara Cave Hotel +10 has an in-house agency for balloon tours, and at Terra Cave Hotel staff can arrange balloon tours and horseback riding.

The morning, step by step

  1. Pick-up before dawn. A vehicle collects you from your hotel while it is still dark. Dress for the cold, which is hardest in winter (see below).
  2. The launch field. The balloons are laid out on the ground. Large fans fill each envelope with cold air, then the burners heat it until it rises upright. Watching this is part of the morning. Launch fields are working sites: stay behind the lines and follow the crew.
  3. Briefing and boarding. The pilot explains where to stand and how to take up the landing position. You climb into the basket, which is often divided into compartments, and you stand for the whole flight.
  4. Lift-off. The burner roars and warms your head, and the ground drops away so gently that many people notice it only by looking down. A balloon moves with the wind, so there is no breeze on your face.
  5. The flight. The pilot cannot steer sideways, only change height to find a wind that goes the right way, so the route differs from day to day. Balloons may drift low over a valley and rise above it again. The flight is usually described as about an hour; the operator and the wind decide.
  6. Landing. Before landing the pilot will tell you to take the landing position, usually facing the direction of travel with knees slightly bent and hands on the handles. A landing can be soft or bumpy, depending on the wind. Stay in the basket until you are told to leave it.
  7. After the flight. Many operators give a flight certificate and some offer a toast. A vehicle takes you back to the hotel, and most people head for breakfast. Ask what is included.

Who should not fly

The following is general; each operator sets its own rules.

  • Pregnancy. Operators commonly do not take pregnant passengers.
  • Back, neck or heart conditions, and recent surgery. Climbing into the basket, standing for an hour and a landing that can be bumpy are all part of the ride. Ask your doctor, and the operator in writing.
  • Limited mobility. You step over the basket wall to get in and out; ask how the operator manages this.
  • Children. Operators set minimum ages and heights. Ask before you book, not at the launch field.
  • Anyone who cannot stand for the flight. Passengers stand throughout.

Check that your travel insurance covers ballooning.

Why your morning may not happen

Balloons fly on the morning’s wind and visibility, and the record shows how much that varies with the season:

Season Days in the record Flown Share
Winter (Dec–Feb) 149 51 34%
Spring (Mar–May) 184 109 59%
Summer (Jun–Aug) 155 126 81%
Autumn (Sep–Nov, 2025 only) 91 54 59%
All 579 340 59%

The record runs from 1 January 2025 to 2 August 2026, the date at which our flight calendar ends, and it only says “flown” or “not flown”: it does not show why a day was cancelled. The longest cancellation streak is 18 days, 5 to 22 February 2025. The practical rule: fly on your first morning, so that a cancellation still leaves you spare mornings, and stay at least 2 nights in summer and 4 to 5 in winter. The month-by-month tables are in when balloons fly.

What to wear

You will be outdoors before sunrise, so look at the average minimum, not the daytime maximum:

Month Average minimum, Nevşehir What it means at the launch field
January −3.6 °C gloves, hat and a warm coat
April 5.1 °C a warm layer and a hat
July 13.7 °C a light layer; it warms fast
October 6.8 °C a warm layer and a hat

Source: Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), Nevşehir, 1959–2025. In every month wear closed shoes with grip and a hat, since the burner heats your head. Tie back long hair and carry nothing loose; a camera strap around your neck is safer than a camera in your hand. Drones are a separate matter: see the photography guide.

If you would rather watch

You do not have to fly to see the balloons. 38 of the 80 catalogue hotels tick a balloon view, and the public viewpoints are covered in where to watch the balloons without flying. For the weather around your dates see when to visit and the weather page.

Where to stay

For a base where the flight can be arranged on the spot, Zara Cave Hotel +10 (17 rooms, Aydınlı Orta, terraces with balloon views) has the in-house agency, and Terra Cave Hotel (a 19th-century rock cave, wake-up service) names balloon tours in its record. Tekkaya Cave Hotel, pictured at the top, is a family-run cave hotel in central Göreme, open since 2018; its record lists parking and Wi-Fi and says nothing about balloons, so ask. All Göreme records are in the hotel list. After choosing, you can book through gocappadocia.com, the regional booking platform created through the combined efforts of 175 Cappadocia hoteliers, with a best-price guarantee; this guide takes no commission.

Questions answered in this article

How long does a balloon ride in Cappadocia take?

The flight itself is usually described as about an hour, but the operator and the wind set the length. The whole morning, from the pre-dawn pick-up to the return to your hotel, takes considerably longer, so ask your operator for the schedule.

When is the decision to fly made?

On the morning of the flight, by civil aviation officials, based on wind and visibility. There is no certain answer the night before, so ask your operator how and when it will tell you.

Who should not take a balloon flight?

Operators generally advise against flying in pregnancy and with certain back, neck, heart or mobility conditions, and they set their own age and height limits for children. Ask the operator in writing, and your doctor if in doubt.

How likely is it that my flight will go ahead?

In the record, balloons flew on 223 of 365 days in 2025 (61%) and 340 of 579 days from 1 January 2025 to 2 August 2026 (59%). By season: 81% in summer, 34% in winter. Book for your first morning and keep a spare one.

What should I wear on the flight?

Layers and closed shoes. The Nevşehir average minimum is −3.6 °C in January and 13.7 °C in July (MGM, 1959–2025), and a hat helps against the burner heat on your head. Tie back long hair and carry nothing loose.
